India Women won their tournament opener against Pakistan Women.
The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 started in England from June 12. India and Pakistan played their tournament openers on June 14, Sunday at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
This was the ninth encounter between teams in Women’s T20 World Cup. India were leading the head-to-head tally by 6-2. After yesterday’s clash, the tally went up to 7-2.
Harmanpreet Kaur and Co. opted to bat first at Edgbaston, pertaining to the slow nature of the pitch. The wicket was expected to get slower in the second innings, and spinners were going to be favoured. For the same reason, India went with three spinners and two medium pacers.
The Women in Blue posted a score of 170 on the board for Pakistan to chase in 20 overs. Smriti Mandhana shone with her brilliant 68 off 44, and the skipper Harmanpreet Kaur contributed 36 runs. Richa Ghosh finished the game well for India with her brisk 34 off 17.
In the second innings, it was all about spin for India. Nine wickets were taken by spinners, with Deepti Sharma’s five-wicket haul, Sree Charani’s 3-wickets and Shafali Verma picking one.
India won the match by a significant margin of 64 runs, being in a comfortable spot on the points table. However, India are placed in the same group as Australia and South Africa too, which means that they can’t things lightly.
India to play Netherlands next on June 17

This is the first edition where twelve teams are contesting in the T20 World Cup, and this edition also marks the maiden appearance of Netherlands Women’s cricket team in this tournament.
Netherlands played their first match against Bangladesh, where they lost by 6 wickets. Batting first, they scored 139 runs with Babette de Leede making her half century. However, they failed to defend 140 runs against Bangladesh.
India will play Netherlands next at Headingley, Leeds, on June 17, Wednesday. This also marks the first time that India will face Netherlands in the T20I format.
While the Women in Blue did win their first match of the tournament, there are aspects that they need to work on for their next clash. The lack of wicket-taking from their medium pacers, can trouble India going forward.
Their fielding has been a concern; even in the match against Pakistan, India dropped some easy catches and misfields. While India’s batting line-up seems sorted, there is still question about the No.3 role, and whether India should play Yastika Bhatia ahead of Bharati Fulmali.
