Did India make mistake by playing Sanju Samson instead of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi?

India have preferred Sanju Samson instead of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as opener with Abhishek Sharma.

Indian Cricket Team are up against Ireland in a in the first T20I of two-match series. The match between the two teams is taking place on Friday, June 26, at Civil Services Cricket Club in Belfast.

The IRE vs IND first T20I also marks Shreyas Iyer’s debut as India’s T20I captain. He has made a comeback to the shortest format after almost two years after he was named as the new skipper earlier this month, replacing Suryakumar Yadav.

The IRE vs IND T20I series has gained a lot of hype due to the presence of uncapped 15-year-old batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The young gun earned his maiden call-up in the series due to his stunning form since the start of this year in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League 2026, where he scored 776 runs.

Ahead of the match, some reports claimed that Sooryavanshi would be making his international debut. He was also seen taking part in practice sessions ahead of the game at the Civil Services Club.

However, skipper Shreyas Iyer and team management did not pick him in the playing XI and revealed at the toss that he would get his opportunities soon. India retained their opening combination of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, who also opened the batting in the T20 World Cup 2026.

Was preferring Sanju Samson over Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as opener in IND vs IRE 1st T20I a good decision?

India made the right call by playing Sanju Samson over Vaibhav in the first clash against Ireland. Notably, Sooryavanshi has no experience of playing at international level, and in Ireland.

With quality of international cricket being very high, he must have been under a little pressure. Hence, playing him directly in unknown conditions might not work out.

Also, Samson impressed with his performance in India’s last campaign in T20 World Cup 2026. With his half-centuries in the semi-final and the final, he played a crucial role in India’s victory in the tournament.

Since Samson has impressed with his performance as an opener, he was allowed to retain his spot. Moreover, Samson has already faced many changes in his batting order in the past and even after his impressive show in the top slot, switching his position once again will not be justified.

Also, since Abhishek Sharma is a left-handed batsman and Vaibhav is also a left-hander, playing a right-handed batter Sanju gives a proper combination of openers.
