India squad for Asia Cup 2023: Rohit Sharma provides update on Rishabh Pant's fitness
Indian selection committee announced a 17-member squad led by Rohit Sharma for the upcoming tournament.
The biggest tournament among the Asian teams will kick off on August 30. The 16th edition of the Asia Cup will take place in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, where Pakistan will start the proceedings with a match against Nepal in Multan. India will begin their campaign on September 2, when they will face Pakistan in Pallekele. On Monday, the Indian selection committee announced the 17-member squad for the coming tournament.
The squad had some big names making their returns in ODI format. Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna, who made their international return and are playing in the ongoing Ireland T20Is, are part of the squad. Apart from them, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are also included in the squad. That is the big news for the fans. Because all four of these players are key members of the ODI squad.
India squad for Asia Cup 2023: Rohit Sharma provides an update on Rishabh Pant’s recovery
The squad was announced in the press conference held on Monday, which also included chief selector Ajit Agarkar and Indian captain Rohit Sharma. The squad also saw the inclusion of 20-year-old Tilak Varma, who made a remarkable debut in the series against West Indies. He has been rewarded, while Suryakumar Yadav is also part of the team. Notably, the Indian captain also gave a major hint about Rishabh Pant.
The 25-year-old suffered a horrible car accident in December 2022 and had several surgeries. He is currently at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. He has shown a great recovery and has taken part in a few practice matches at NCA. However, he is not fully fit, as Rohit Sharma indicated. Rohit said, “Unfortunately, Rishabh is not fit yet. According to today’s fitness report, Rishabh Pant is not ready for Asia Cup 2023 selection.”
Yuzvendra Chahal is not part of the team, while Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel are the three spinners. Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj are also back. All in all, it is a great squad, and this might be the same team that will play in the upcoming ODI World Cup. Notably, India haven’t made the finals of the last two Asia Cup editions, so they will look to do well this time around.
