Mohammed Shami is unlikely to be named in the India squad to face Bangladesh.
The Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team are set to host Bangladesh for a two-match test series, starting September 19. The two tests will be played in Chennai and Kanpur. This series will be part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25.
India have not lost a home test series since 2013, but Bangladesh are expected to give the Asian giants a tough fight as they are high on confidence following a historic maiden test series victory over Pakistan earlier this month.
Indian batsmen have shown vulnerability against spin in recent times, as evident with their home test match losses to Australia and England.
When will BCCI announce the India squad for Bangladesh tests?
The BCCI is likely to announce the India squad to face Bangladesh after the completion of the first round of Duleep Trophy matches, which will commence on September 5. Hence, the squad is likely to be announced on 9th September, 10 days before the first test gets underway.
Some first-choice players – Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, R Ashwin, and Jasprit Bumrah – are rested from the Duleep Trophy, while several others would be looking to make their case for selection in the squad or in the playing XI.
The likes of KL Rahul, Dhruv Jurel, Kuldeep Yadav, Akash Deep, Sarfaraz Khan, Shreyas Iyer, Arshdeep Singh, Rishabh Pant, Mukesh Kumar, and KS Bharat are the ones who would be eyeing impressive performances in the first round of matches in the Duleep Trophy.
Pant is making his comeback to red-ball cricket through the Duleep Trophy. If he does well, he could be roped back into the test squad and the management could even straightaway give him the position of the first-choice keeper with the Australia tour in mind.
Fast bowler Mohammed Shami, who is recovering after an ankle surgery, is unlikely to be picked for the Bangladesh tests.
The India squad members will kick off their preparation on September 12 in Chennai. The visitors will start their training on September 15.
India have a long test season ahead, which includes five home tests (two vs Bangladesh and three vs New Zealand) followed by five tests in Australia.
