India and Japan are all set to share the cricket field in a historic one-off T20 encounter in Japan. The game is scheduled for September 22, 2026, at the Sano International Cricket Ground and will be played under the Suzuki Cup banner. This series will be played in Japan before the start of the men’s event in the Asian Games tournament. 

The fixture has already attracted considerable attention because it will be Japan’s first match against a full ICC member. Japan’s cricket authorities have worked alongside the Indian cricket authorities to lead to the massive growth of the sport within the nation. 

Has the ICC granted international status to the India vs Japan match?

The answer is yes; the ICC has granted the India vs Japan clash the status of a T20 international, rather than simply being an exhibition or warm-up game. The ICC’s decision to grant T20I status to matches involving all its member nations has acted as the final decision here. 

That makes the fixture particularly important for Japan. The Japanese side has been an ICC member since 1989 and an associate member since 2005. Their men’s team played their first T20I in 2022 and have subsequently built up experience through international competition.

For India, the match comes at an interesting point in the calendar. The team will be preparing for the Asian Games. On the other hand, the Indian women’s team will also clash against the Japanese team in the Asian Games. 

The Japan Cricket Association has used the fixture as part of a broader effort to raise the popularity of cricket in the country, with the Indian board and their government playing a massive role in its expansion in the island nation. The match is scheduled to mark the launch of “Sport 75”, which celebrates 75 years of diplomatic ties between India and Japan.
