The Japan Cricket Association and the BCCI have together announced a T20I fixture.
Cricket is expanding beyond its traditional strongholds and reaching new audiences through international matches. The Indian national cricket team are the most popular side and are now set to be part of a particularly significant occasion in Japan.
The upcoming occasion will combine cricket with a major milestone in India-Japan relations. The Indian team will also be heading to Japan this month for the Asian Games, scheduled to be played between the 24th of September and the 3rd of October.

India will take on Japan in a T20 International on September 22, 2026, at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. The match will begin at 1:00 PM local time, which is 9:30 AM IST, and will be known as the Suzuki Cup.
The game has been organised as part of celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of India-Japan diplomatic relations.
It will also launch the “Sport 75” initiative, which is an agreement reached during a summit between Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
For India, this match represents an opportunity to take its international cricketing presence into a country where the sport is still not very popular. Devajit Saikia, the BCCI secretary, described it as a significant moment, as India will be responsible for spreading cricket to a wider audience in Japan and East Asia.
“The BCCI is delighted to be part of this historic occasion as the Indian and Japanese men’s teams come together for a special T20 International in Japan. This is a significant moment for cricket, as it takes the Indian team to new territory and provides an opportunity to introduce the sport to a wider audience in Japan and East Asia.” Devajit Saikia said.
The timing of this contest makes it even more interesting, as the 2026 Asian Games cricket competition is also being staged in Japan. India are the side entering the tournament as the defending champions. The India vs Japan Suzuki Cup could come just days before India initiates their Asian Games campaign.
Japan Cricket Association CEO Naoki Miyaji, meanwhile, called the opportunity to welcome the reigning world champions to Japan a “landmark moment”. The BCCI and the JCA are supposed to work closely to strengthen cricket in Japan, which would also help build the relationship between the two nations.
“To be able to invite the reigning World Champions to then home of cricket in Japan is a landmark moment for our association. We thank the BCCI for working with us towards this goal and greatly look forward to welcoming the passion of Indian cricket fans, and we actively encourage any local Japanese people curious about cricket to come and cheer on our team in what will be a truly memorable occasion.” JCA CEO Naoki Miyaji said
