India and Japan are set to play historic T20I on September 22.
India are set for a busy T20 schedule in September, with the team facing Afghanistan in a three-match series before travelling to Japan for a special one-off T20I and Asian Games 2026.
The India vs Japan match is part of the Suzuki Cup and will also mark an important moment in the cricketing relationship between the two countries. The Asian Games in Japan are also scheduled to begin later this month, adding more importance to India’s T20 plans.
It will be the first time that India and Japan will be playing against each other in senior international cricket. It also ties into a bigger “Sports 75” push between the two nations, celebrating the 75 years of diplomatic relations.

The one-off T20I between India and Japan will be played at the Sano International Cricket Stadium in Japan. The match will be part of the Suzuki Cup and will also celebrate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between two countries.
With match still some daya away, the Japan Cricket Association (JCA) announced on Thursday that tickets for the historic match have been completely sold out.
“Tickets for this historic match are sold out! Japan and India will face off for the first time ever on the international cricket stage! Thank you for all your support for this historic match at Sano International Cricket Stadium,” The JCA said in a post on X.
This will be the first time that two countries will face each other in senior international cricket. While the bilateral one-off T20I will be between the two men’s teams, the Women’s teams will face each other in the 2026 Asian Games in the quarterfinals on September 18.
The men’s teams could face each other again during the 2026 Asian Games if Japan gets through the preliminary stage. All the matches of Asian Games will be played at the Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin in Aichi Prefecture.
For Japan, hosting India is a huge milestone. The JCA has been working to grow cricket domestically, and a full house against a marquee opponent gives the game a major boost. It also sets a strong tone before the Asian Games for both the teams.
