Twitter erupts as India women's cricket team defeat Sri Lanka in final to win Asian Games gold medal

India women won their second Asian Games gold medal in cricket.
India women’s team created history as they defeated Sri Lanka in the finals for the gold medal in Asian Games being played in Hangzhou, China, on September 25, 2023. India and Sri Lanka had both been seeded high and played directly in the quarter-finals.
India moved into the semi-finals after their match against Malaysia was washed out due to rain. Then, in the semi-finals, India women decimated Bangladesh by 8 wickets. Bangladesh was bowled out for 51 runs, with Pooja Vastrakar taking 4/17. In response, Jemimah Rodrigues led the charge as India won the match comfortably.
On the other hand, Sri Lanka women had defeated Thailand women in the quarter-finals by 8 wickets, chasing 79 runs. In the semi-finals, Sri Lanka clashed with Pakistani women and restricted them to 75/9. Then, in the chase, Sri Lanka did well to win the match by six wickets.

The final match for the gold medal event was played at Hangzhou’s Zhejiang University of Technology Cricket Field in China on September 25, 2023. India was led by Harmanpreet Kaur, who returned to the side after her two-match suspension ended.
Harmanpreet won the toss and chose to bat first on a difficult pitch. Indian innings were the story of two innings, Smriti Mandhana (46) and Jemimah Rodrigues (42) reached double figures and added a valuable 73 runs for the second wicket. India managed 117/6 in 20 overs. For Sri Lanka, Udeshika Prabodhini, Sugandika Kumari, and Inoka Ranaweera took two wickets each.
In response, Sri Lankan women also didn’t find it easy to bat. Titas Sadhu gave India the perfect start, taking the top three wickets and ending with figures of 3/6 in her four overs. Hasini Perera (25), Nilakshi de Silva (23), and Oshadi Ranasinghe (19) tried their best to keep the Sri Lankan side in the chase. But Indian bowlers on this pitch proved to be too much for them, as they managed 97/8 in 20 overs.
India won the gold medal match by 19 runs, and this was their second gold medal in the Asian Games in the women’s cricket event.
