Indian batsmen to hit twin-centuries in test cricket

Eight Indian batsmen have hit twin-centuries in test cricket.

A century in test cricket is always a special milestone for any batter, because it takes a lot of hard work and determination to reach three figures in the longest format of the game. But there have been some batters who have achieved the milestone of two centuries in a same test match.

Australia’s Warren Bardsley was the first batter to achieve this feat. India have been blessed with many batting greats who have dominated world cricket. A number of those achieved this special feat.

There have been 11 instances when an Indian batter hit twin-centuries in a test cricket match. This article will feature all those Indians who have scored two centuries in a single test match.

List of Indian batsmen to hit twin-centuries in test cricket

1. Vijay Hazare – 116 & 145 vs Australia, Adelaide in 1948

The first Indian batter to score twin centuries in a test cricket match was legend Vijay Hazare. He did it against Australia at the Adelaide Oval back in January 1948. He had an incredible game with the bat. After scoring 116 runs in the first innings, he scored 145 in the second.

But it came in a losing cause as in response to Australia’s 674, India only made 381 and 277 in two innings, losing the game by an innings and 16 runs.

2. Sunil Gavaskar – 124 & 220 vs West Indies, Port of Spain in 1971

The record for the highest aggregate by an Indian batter in a test is held by Sunil Gavaskar. In 1971 against the West Indies, Gavaskar scored a century and a double century in the same game at Port of Spain. Gavaskar scored 124 runs in the first innings.

But his 220 in the second innings was very important because India were trailing by 166 runs. He played a marathon knock of 529 minutes to save the test.

3. Sunil Gavaskar – 111 & 137 vs Pakistan, Karachi in 1978

The second time Sunil Gavaskar achieved twin centuries was against arch-rivals Pakistan in Karachi in 1978. Opening the batting, Gavaskar scored 111 and 137 runs in two innings, where only two other batters from his team scored half-centuries. India were under pressure, but Gavaskar’s knock helped India to draw the game.

4. Sunil Gavaskar – 107 & 182* vs West Indies, Eden Gardens in 1978

The third and final time when Gavaskar scored twin centuries in test cricket was against the West Indies at the Eden Gardens in December 1978.

The game ended in a draw, and Gavaskar and Dilip Vengsarkar (157*) added the second-highest partnership for the second wicket of an unbeaten 344 runs in the second innings. Gavaskar made 107 and 182* runs in two innings.

5. Rahul Dravid – 190 & 103* vs New Zealand, Hamilton in 1999

Rahul Dravid was only the third Indian batter to hit twin centuries in test cricket. He did it against New Zealand at Hamilton in January 1999.

It was a match-saving effort as New Zealand gave India a target of 415 to chase in the fourth innings. Dravid made 190 and 103 not out, and India managed to draw the game.

6. Rahul Dravid – 110 & 135 vs Pakistan, Eden Gardens in 2005

Dravid’s second instance of hitting twin centuries came against arch-rivals Pakistan in March 2005 at the Eden Gardens. It was a match-winning performance as Dravid scored 110 runs in the first innings to help India take a lead.

Then in the second innings, he scored 135, and helped India set up a target of 422 for Pakistan, which the ended up winning by 195 runs. Dravid was adjudged Man of the Match for his brilliant performance.

7. Virat Kohli – 115 & 141 vs Australia, Adelaide in 2014

No Indian fan can forget the captaincy debut of Virat Kohli in test cricket. It was certainly one of the best captaincy debuts that one can see. India toured Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and it was the first test at Adelaide Oval. Against the bowling attack led by Mitchell Johnson, Virat scored 115 and 141 runs in two innings.

India had a target of 364 runs to chase, and they were well on course, but Virat’s wicket ended India’s hopes, and they fell short by 48 runs.

8. Ajinkya Rahane – 127 & 100* vs South Africa, Delhi in 2015

Ajinkya Rahane was only the fifth Indian batter to score twin centuries in test cricket. His milestone came against South Africa in Delhi in December 2015. It was the last game of the four-match test series, and Rahane scored 127 and unbeaten 100 in two innings.

After scoring 334 and 267/5d, India bowled South Africa out for 121 and 143 to win the game by 337 runs. Rahane won the Man of the Match award for his twin centuries.

9. Rohit Sharma – 176 & 127 vs South Africa, Vizag in 2019

Rohit Sharma had very good numbers as a test opener, and he also had hit twin centuries in his test career. He had this moment against South Africa in Visakhapatnam during a home series in 2019. The game started with a 317-run opening stand between Mayank Agarwal (215) and Rohit Sharma (176).

India were in a great position in both the innings. Rohit slammed 127 runs in the second innings. India won that game by 203 runs, and Rohit won Player of the Match award.

10. Rishabh Pant – 134 & 118 vs England, Leeds in 2025

Rishabh Pant became the latest Indian batter to join this elite list. He achieved this rare feat against England at Headingley, Leeds in June 2025. It was the first game of the series, and Pant’s counterattacking effort put England under pressure in both innings.

He scored 134 and 118 runs in two innings and slammed nine sixes and 27 fours in the game. With this, Pant became first ever Indian batter to achieve the feat in English soil and also achieved the record of most runs scored by an Indian wicket-keeper in a test match in England.

11. Shubman Gill – 269 & 100* vs England, Birmingham in 2025

After Rishabh Pant achieved the feat in first test of India’s tour of England in 2025, Shubman Gill followed in the very next match at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

Gill scored his maiden double hundred in first innings of the game and then followed it up with another century in the second innings. On the course, he also broke Sunil Gavaskar’s record for most runs scored by an Indian batter in a test match.
