Only six Indian bowlers have picked up all 10 wickets in an innings in First Class cricket.

First Class (FC) cricket is known for its grinding nature. Unlike the shorter formats, batters enjoy the luxury of time to build their innings patiently with minimum risk in FC cricket. For bowlers, the format comes with the challenge of persistence in bowling long spells.

Despite these challenges, Indian cricket history has witnessed many heroic bowling performances at First Class level.

In this article, we will take a look at remarkable instances where Indian bowlers etched their names in history by claiming all 10 wickets in a single innings in FC cricket.

So far, six Indian bowlers have claimed a 10-wicket innings haul in FC cricket and three of these instances came in Ranji Trophy, and one in international cricket.

Instances of Indian bowlers picking 10 wickets in an innings in First Class cricket:

1. Subhash Gupte – 10/78 (Bombay vs Pakistan Combined Services, 1954-55)

Subhash Gupte etched his name in Indian cricket’s history book when he became the first Indian bowler to claim all ten wickets in a FC game.

Gupte, a legendary leg spinner who represented India in 36 tests, achieved this rare feat against Pakistan Combined Services in 1954-55. Gupte finished the innings with impressive bowling figures of 10/78.

2. Premangsu Chatterjee – 10/20 (Bengal vs Assam, 1956-57)

Bengal’s Premangsu Chatterjee was the second Indian to achieve the rare feat of claiming all ten wickets in an innings in FC cricket, and the first in Ranji Trophy history.

Chatterjee attained it against Assam at Eden Gardens in a Ranji Trophy game in the 1956-57 season. Chatterjee’s heroics helped Bengal tighten their grip on the game and win the game by an innings and 206 runs.

Premangsu’s returns of 10/20 remain the best bowling figures by an Indian bowler in first-class history.

3. Pradeep Sunderam – 10/78 (Rajasthan vs Vidarbha, 1985-86)

Rajasthan’s Pradeep Sunderam was the second bowler in the history of the Ranji Trophy to claim all 10 wickets in an innings. It came against Vidarbha in their Ranji Trophy game in the 1985-86 season.

Sunderam, a tall right-hand fast bowler, returned with bowling figures of 10/78. Although Pradeep never represented India in international cricket, his bowling performance against Vidarbha remains one of the most iconic by any Indian bowler in FC cricket.

4. Anil Kumble – 10/74 (India vs Pakistan, 1999)

Anil Kumble holds the record of being the only Indian bowler to claim all 10 wickets in an innings in test cricket. Kumble’s record-breaking spell came against Pakistan in 1999 at Delhi’s Feroz Shah Kotla.

Defending a target of 420, Kumble guided India to victory with his excellent bowling figures of 10/74. Kumble is one of the only three bowlers to have this record in test cricket.

5. Debasis Mohanty – 10/46 (East Zone vs South Zone, 2000-01)

Odisha pacer Debasis Mohanty bagged all 10 wickets in an innings while representing East Zone against South Zone during the 2000-01 Duleep Trophy.

Mohanty’s record-breaking spell came on the opening day of the game in Agartala. Mohanty dismantled a star-studded South Zone batting lineup featuring big names like VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid. His brilliance with the ball helped East Zone in winning the game by four wickets.

6. Anshul Kamboj – 10/49 (Haryana vs Kerala, 2024)

The latest bowler to join this elite list is Haryana’s Anshul Kamboj. Kamboj’s heroics came in a Ranji Trophy game against Kerala in 2024.

Kamboj ripped through Kerala’s batting lineup with his exceptional bowling figures of 10/49. With this feat, Kamboj became only the third bowler in Ranji Trophy history to claim all 10 wickets in a single innings.
