Top 5 Indian bowlers with most T20I wickets in 2024
Three Indian bowlers finished the year with 20 or more T20I wickets in 2024.
In a format as unpredictable as T20 cricket, India have achieved this year what few teams can boast – sheer dominance and consistency. India’s 2024 run in the shortest format of the game will go down in history as arguably the most successful for any T20I side among Full Member nations.
Closing out the year with 24 wins out of 26 games, India abandoned their conservative batting approach to adopt a fearless risk-taking style of play. Their win/loss ratio of 12 is the best any Full Member team has ever managed in a calendar year in T20Is.
India’s dominance in T20Is in 2024 included series clean sweeps over Afghanistan and Bangladesh at home, over Sri Lanka away, 4-1 win in Zimbabwe and 3-1 in South Africa.
The most important achievement for the Men in Blue, though, came in June when they clinched the ICC Men’s T20 World 2024 at Barbados, defeating cricketing heavyweights like Pakistan, Australia, England, and South Africa on their way.
India’s bowling unit has been pivotal to their success this year. Playing a huge part in their T20 World Cup win, India defended 30 runs off 30 balls against the Proteas in the final of the tournament.
In this article, we will look at the top five Indian bowlers who have picked the most T20I wickets in 2024.
Top five Indian bowlers with most T20I wickets in 2024
5. Hardik Pandya – 16 wickets
The year 2024 has been full of ups and downs for Hardik Pandya. While he struggled to find form during the Indian Premier League (IPL), he stepped up for the national side time and again. His returns with the ball were especially impressive.
Pandya capped off the year with 16 wickets in 17 T20Is, maintaining an economy rate of 8.3. Pandya’s heroics include his last over in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 final, where he defended 16 runs against South Africa to clinch the title for India.
4. Varun Chakravarthy – 17 wickets
Despite playing just seven T20Is this year, Varun Chakravarthy has emerged as the fourth-most successful bowler for India in 2024, picking up 17 wickets at an economy of 7.5 runs per over.
Varun missed out on the T20 World Cup squad, but made a return to the side after almost three years with the home series against Bangladesh where he picked up five wickets in three games.
His most impressive performances came in South Africa, where he finished the series as the leading wicket-taker with 12 wickets in four games.
3. Axar Patel – 20 wickets
All-rounder Axar Patel had a breakthrough year in T20Is as he scalped 20 wickets in 16 games at an economy rate of just 7. Axar was a key part of the Indian squad in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, contributing with both bat and ball.
In the T20 World Cup, he snapped nine wickets in eight games, including a three-wicket haul against England in the semi-final.
2. Ravi Bishnoi – 22 wickets
Young leg spinner Ravi Bishnoi is believed to be India’s next long-term lead spinner in the shortest format. 2024 has been a breakthrough year for Bishnoi, with the young spinner picking up 22 wickets in 18 games.
Bishnoi’s most impressive performance this year came against Sri Lanka where he picked up six wickets in three games at an average of 16.8.
1. Arshdeep Singh – 36 wickets
Arshdeep Singh has emerged as the T20 bowling superstar for India. Arshdeep had a terrific year in the shortest format, taking 36 wickets in 18 games, recording the most T20I wickets for his country in 2024.
