Top 5 Indian captains with most ducks in international cricket

Five Indian captains have registered 10 or more ducks in international cricket.

The Indian cricket team is one of the most dominant and successful teams of all time across formats. The Asian Giants have been blessed with legendary cricketers who have produced many match-winning performances across the globe.

They also have had plenty of great captains who have led the side from the front through their exceptional performances. From Kapil Dev to MS Dhoni to now Rohit Sharma, all the Indian captains have established their legacy in different eras.

But alongside the highs, the lows also follow a cricket. And to score a duck as an Indian captain can be really embarrassing for the player. On that note, let’s take a look at the Indian skippers with the most ducks in international cricket.

Indian captains with the most ducks in international cricket:

5. Kapil Dev – 10 ducks

Kapil Dev was one of the greatest all-rounders of all time. Dev’s greatest achievement as a captain was leading the Asian Giants to the 1983 ODI World Cup title.

In his legendary career, Kapil amassed 9031 runs in 356 matches. The all-rounder slammed nine centuries and 41 half-centuries across formats. Kapil, however, also recorded 10 ducks in international cricket as a captain.

With the ball, Kapil is the fourth-highest wicket-taker for his nation across formats. The speedster picked 687 wickets at an impressive bowling average of 28.83, including 24 five-wicket hauls.

4. Rohit Sharma – 11 ducks

Rohit Sharma is one of the greatest openers of all time. The 37-year-old is the fourth-highest run scorer for his nation in international cricket.

Rohit has hammered 19330 runs in 487 international matches at a good average of 42.86, with 48 centuries and 107 half-centuries across formats.

As a captain, Rohit Sharma helped the Indian cricket team lift the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados. However, while leading the side, Rohit has also registered 11 ducks, which is not surprising considering he faces the new ball.

3. MS Dhoni – 11 ducks

MS Dhoni is the most successful Indian captain in white-ball cricket, having led his nation to three ICC titles: ICC T20 World Cup 2007, ICC ODI World Cup 2011 and ICC Champions Trophy 2013.

Dhoni is the sixth-highest run-scorer for his country in international cricket. The keeper-batter slammed 17092 runs in 535 international matches at a brilliant average of 44.74, notching up 15 centuries and 108 half-centuries.

Dhoni, though, also recorded 11 ducks as an Indian captain across formats.

2. Sourav Ganguly – 13 ducks

Former captain Sourav Ganguly was dismissed for a duck 13 times in his capacity as an Indian captain in international cricket.

The left-handed batter made 18433 runs in 421 matches across formats. Ganguly had a decent average of 41.42 and raised 38 centuries and 106 half-centuries in his career.

Under Ganguly, India won the famous NatWest Series 2002, defeating hosts England in the final at the Lord’s.

1. Virat Kohli – 16 ducks

Virat Kohli has recorded the most ducks (16) as an Indian captain in international cricket.

He is, however, also the second-highest run-getter for his nation across formats, a record that overshadows the most ducks tally.

Kohli has notched up 27112 runs in 537 international matches at an outstanding average of 53.05. The right-hander has hit 80 centuries and 141 half-centuries till now.
