Top 5 Indian captains with most wins in first 10 Tests ft. Shubman Gill

MS Dhoni leads the list with the most wins in his first 10 Tests.

There have been many great captains in the history of Indian Test cricket, but only a few have made their mark right at the beginning of their captaincy.

After Shubman Gill’s recorded a benchmark victory against Sri Lanka in his 10th match as captain, here’s a comparative highlight of all Indian captains who recorded the most victories in their first 10 games as captain of the Indian Test team.

Indian captains with the most wins in their first 10 Tests:

Rohit Sharma – 5 wins

Rohit Sharma, who took over the captaincy of the Indian Test team from Virat Kohli, also secured five wins in his first 10 Test matches. Ultimately, Rohit’s tenure as captain concluded with 12 wins in 24 Test matches.

However, Rohit Sharma remains one of the two captains, alongside Virat Kohli, to have led India to an ICC World Test Championship Final.

Although Virat Kohli sits at the top of the list of India’s most successful Test captains with an overall win record of 40 matches and an unmatched win percentage, his start to a captaincy career looked rather modest.

After taking over the captaincy on a full-time basis in early 2015, Kohli secured 5 wins in his first 10 matches as captain of the Indian Test team. Under Virat’s reign, India’s golden era of Test dominance saw the Men in Blue dominate teams like Australia and Sri Lanka on their own soil.

Sourav Ganguly – 6 wins

Sourav Ganguly is known as the captain who transformed Indian cricket after it saw its biggest downfall. A sporadic start to his career as the captain of the Indian team, with six wins in 10 games, reflected the aggressive leadership style that became a trademark of his tenure.

Ganguly’s early success was also significant because he inherited a team that was in the process of being built; he played a major role in forging a formidable Indian side that went on to make history.

Shubman Gill – 6 wins

Young Indian skipper Shubman Gill has made an impressive beginning to his Test captaincy, taking over the leadership from Rohit Sharma. Gill announced a new era in Indian cricket when he led India to a series draw against England in his first-ever outing as Test captain.

After guiding India through a tough phase of transition, Shubman Gill led the team to six victories in his first 10 Test matches. This has placed him on par with the legendary Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly.

MS Dhoni – 7 wins

Often regarded as one of the greatest captains in the history of cricket, MS Dhoni‘s start as India’s Test captain was remarkably successful.

Leading India in his first 10 Tests as captain, Dhoni guided India to 7 victories, establishing himself as one of the most effective leaders in the longest format of the game.

His early success as captain accelerated India’s rise in Test cricket during the late 2000s. His captaincy helped India reach the No. 1 position in the ICC Test rankings. Dhoni remains the most successful Indian captain, having secured the most wins in his first 10 Test matches.

Who has the most wins as India’s Test captain?

Virat Kohli has registered the most wins as captain of the Indian Test team (40 wins).

Which captains led India to a WTC Final?

Both Virat Kohli (2021) and Rohit Sharma (2023) led the Indian team to their respective WTC Finals.
