5 Indian cricketers who have been dropped from India's T20I squad for Asia Cup 2025

Indian Cricket Team will begin their Asia Cup 2025 campaign on 10th September.

Indian Cricket Team are all set to defend their title in the 17th edition of the Asia Cup, which they will host in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The eight-team tournament will begin on September 9, while India will open their campaign on September 10 against the UAE.

On Tuesday, 19th August, the Indian selection committee headed by Ajit Agarkar and T20I captain Suryakumr Yadav announced the squad for the upcoming multinational tournament. Suryakumar Yadav will be leading the team while India’s new test captain, Shubman Gill, has been included and named as vice-captain of the side.

There have been some surprise inclusions in the squad, while some big names have been ignored as well. Here we will talk about five Indian cricketers who were part of last T20I series, but didn’t get a chance for Asia Cup 2025.

5 Indian cricketers who have been dropped from India’s T20I squad for Asia Cup 2025

1. Nitish Kumar Reddy

All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy is one of the five players who was a part of India’s last T20I series, but hasn’t been selected for this year’s Asia Cup. He has been India’s all-round option in tests and T20Is since the last year. He missed the last two tests against England due to an injury, but was likely to get fit before the continental tournament. However, with Shivam Dube and Hardik Pandya getting selected as two seam-bowling all-rounders, Nitish failed to make the cut.

Moreover, the pitches in the UAE will favour spinners more, and Axar Patel would anyway preferred over Nitish in the playing XI.

2. Mohammed Shami

Veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami, who made a return to international cricket earlier this year in the home T20I series against England, also has missed out on a spot in the Indian squad for this year’s Asia Cup. After making his India comeback in the England T20I series, he then played in the ODI series and also the ICC Champions Trophy in the UAE earlier this year, which India won.

However, India have gone with young bowlers, and Shami has been sidelined.

3. Ravi Bishnoi

Former No. 1 ranked T20I bowler and current No. 7 Ravi Bishnoi also failed to make a cut to the Indian squad for Asia Cup 2025. He was given consistent chances in T20Is and he also did pretty well. But, the incredible comeback of Varun Chakravarthy and the presence of Kuldeep Yadav has denied him a spot in the T20I squad for Asia Cup 2025.

4. Washington Sundar

Washington Sundar was one of India’s impactful performers in the recently-concluded test tour of England. There were some rumors that he might be picked for Asia Cup 2025 as well with pitches in the UAE helping spinners more and also for his ability with the bat.

However, India have gone with Axar Patel as first-choice spin-bowling all-rounder in the squad. Notably, Sundar has been named among five standbys by the BCCI for Asia Cup 2025. He might get drafted into the squad if any of the spinners get injured during the tournament.

5. Dhurv Jurel

Wicket-keeper batter Dhruv Jurel is another player who was part of India’s last T20I series, but has been left out of the squad for Asia Cup 2025. With Sanju Samson being the first-choice wicket-keeper batter, India have gone with Jitesh Sharma as the back-up keeper-batter. Jitesh was in scheme of things for India in T20Is, but gradually lost his place. But, with his outstanding performance in the IPL earlier this year, he made a comeback to the T20I side, and Jurel had to make his way.

However, Jurel has been named as one of standbys by the BCCI and can get included in the squad if any of Samson or Jitesh get injured.
