Football has seen a significant rise in popularity in India, thanks in part to the Indian Super League (ISL) and various other footballing ventures. A few Indian cricketers, already national icons due to their achievements in cricket, have taken a keen interest in football, not just as fans but as investors.

By owning football teams, they are playing a pivotal role in promoting the sport across the country. Here’s a look at three prominent cricketers who are co-owners of football teams in India and are contributing to the sport’s growth.

List of three Indian cricketers who own football clubs:

1. MS Dhoni – Chennaiyin FC

Former India captain MS Dhoni, fondly known as “Thala” by his fans, expanded his sports portfolio in 2014 when he became a minority stakeholder in Chennaiyin FC, one of the most successful teams in the ISL. Dhoni shares ownership of the Chennai-based club with Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan and industrialist Vita Dani. Together, they have helped make Chennaiyin FC a formidable force in Indian football.

Chennaiyin FC, also called “The Marina Machans,” have enjoyed considerable success, winning the ISL title twice (in 2015 and 2018). The club’s solid management structure has helped them consistently perform at the top level of Indian football.

Dhoni’s involvement in Chennaiyin FC has not only increased the team’s popularity but also shown his dedication to nurturing Indian football, a sport he has long admired.

Indian batting great and former skipper Virat Kohli entered the world of football ownership in 2014 when he invested in ISL team FC Goa. Kohli’s love for football is well-known, and he is often seen juggling a football during cricket warm-up sessions. His investment in FC Goa reflects his vision for the sport’s growth in India, especially in the football-loving state of Goa.

Under Kohli’s part-ownership, FC Goa has made significant strides in Indian football. The club was the first to win the ISL Shield, awarded to the team that finishes first in the league stage. FC Goa also became the first Indian team to qualify for the prestigious AFC Champions League, marking a major achievement in the club’s history.

Kohli’s continued association with the club has helped enhance its reputation, making FC Goa one of the most exciting teams to watch in Indian football.

Sanju Samson, the captain of Rajasthan Royals, has ventured into football by co-owning Mallapuram FC, a franchise-based team in the Super League Kerala. Known for his sharp cricketing skills, Samson’s move into football reflects his passion for sports beyond the cricket field.

Mallapuram FC is quickly gaining recognition and boast several high-caliber players. The team has signed notable players like Pedro Manzi and Alejandro Sanchez, former I-League Golden Boot winners.

The team is also in good hands on the managerial front, being coached by John Gregory, a former manager of Aston Villa in the English Premier League. Gregory brings a wealth of international experience and tactical acumen to the squad, which should help raise the level of competition in the Kerala Super League.

Samson’s investment in Mallapuram FC underscores his commitment to promoting football in Kerala, where the sport enjoys a passionate fan base.
