Shubman Gill is the new captain of Indian Cricket Team in tests.

On Monday, 24th May, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the Indian squad for the upcoming test series against England. Shubman Gill has been named as the new skipper of the team. Hence, the England tour will be his first assignment as the full-time captain.

During India’s tour of England 2025, both teams will clash in five test matches. The first test will take place at the Headingley, Leeds and will commence on June 20. The series will conclude with the fifth test at Kennington Oval, London, from July 31 to August 4.

Notably, Rishabh Pant has been named as the new vice-captain of in tests. He replaces Jasprit Bumrah, who held the role of vice-captain under former skipper Rohit Sharma. Hence, two youngsters are all set to take the leadership role in whites.

Shubman Gill will be leading an 18-member squad on the England tour. Experienced members like KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Kuldeep Yadav retained their places in the side. While Mohammed Shami and Shreyas Iyer are two prominent names missing from the squad.

Youngsters like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudharsan, Nitish Reddy, Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna, and Arshdeep Singh have also captured spots in the squad. Interestingly, two players have returned to the test team after a long gap. On that note, let’s look at two cricketers who made a comeback to the Indian test team for the 2025 England tour.

Two Indian cricketers who made a comeback to Indian test team for 2025 England tour

1. Shardul Thakur

With his ability to both bowl and bat, Shardul Thakur is considered a powerful seam all-rounder in tests. He has played 11 tests so far and has contributed equally well for the side in all three departments. He has slammed four half-centuries and has picked 31 wickets in his career.

The Mumbai all-rounder has returned to the test team after a gap of more than a year following his impressive performances for his state team in Ranji Trophy 2024-25. He last played a test match against South Africa in December 2023.

2. Karun Nair

Surprisingly, Karun Nair has made a fabulous comeback to the test team after eight years. Nair last represented the test team during a series against Australia in March 2017, just a few games after he slammed a magical triple-century against England.

Nair, who has played six tests for Indian Cricket Team, has been picked for the England tour following his impressive performance in domestic cricket. Nair was part of the Vidarbha team that won Ranji Trophy 2024-25 earlier this year. He impressed many with his batting as he slammed 863 runs at an average of 54 to go with four tons and two fifties.
