The sixth round of Ranji Trophy 2024/25 started on January 23.

The Indian Cricket Team have faced heavy criticism for their poor performances in test cricket recently. The Asian giants started 2024 on a positive note, winning the five-match home test series against England with a 4-1 margin.

Problems for the test side began in October when India faced an unprecedented 3-0 whitewash at home against New Zealand. They then lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia for the first time since 2015.

The string of poor results has raised questions about the preparation of Indian test players and the superstar culture within the team. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) then reportedly made it mandatory for players to participate in domestic tournaments during breaks in international cricket.

The decision from the BCCI led several Indian test team batsmen, including captain Rohit Sharma, to represent their respective domestic teams in the ongoing Ranji Trophy fixtures, starting on January 23.

Performances of Indian test team batsmen in Ranji Trophy on January 23:

1. Rohit Sharma – 3 runs

Rohit Sharma struggled throughout the BGT 2024-25, managing only 31 runs in five innings. Despite shuffling his batting position to regain form, he couldn’t turn things around. He’s now had a poor start to his Ranji return as well.

Opening the innings for Mumbai against Jammu & Kashmir, Rohit was dismissed by Umar Nazir for just three runs in the sixth over of the innings.

2. Yashasvi Jaiswal – 4 runs

Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal’s return to domestic cricket didn’t go as expected, as he was trapped lbw by Auqib Nabi for just four runs in Mumbai’s group-stage match against Jammu & Kashmir.

Jaiswal was one of the few Indian batsmen who looked confident during the Australian tour. The southpaw finished as India’s leading run-scorer in the BGT 2024-25, amassing 391 runs in 10 innings, including a brilliant century in Perth.

He was expected to do well in the Ranji Trophy but failed in his first outing.

3. Shubman Gill – 4 runs

While he has been given the No. 3 spot in the Indian test team, Shubman Gill opened the innings for Punjab in their group-stage clash against Karnataka. The 25-year-old was caught behind for just four runs in his eight-ball stay at the crease.

Gill has struggled for form recently in red-ball cricket and was even dropped from the Indian team for the Boxing Day test in Melbourne.

4. Rishabh Pant – 1 run

Delhi faced Saurashtra in Rajkot in a Group D match. Indian keeper-batsman Rishabh Pant was part of the game but managed only a single run in Delhi’s first innings. Pant was dismissed by left-arm spinner Dharmendrasinh Jadeja.

Pant had a mostly lean BGT 2024-25. He managed only one fifty in nine outings in Australia.

5. Shreyas Iyer – 11 runs

Shreyas Iyer was dropped from the Indian test team last year. He failed to make a case for himself in the first innings of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy match against Jammu & Kashmir as he was dismissed for 11 runs by medium pacer Yudhvir Singh Charak.
