Indian women's cricket team nominated for 2026 Laureus World Team of the Year award

The Indian women’s cricket team won their maiden ODI World Cup in 2025 on home soil.

In 2025, Harmanpreet Kaur and her team brought glory to India by winning their first World Cup title in the 50-over format. Coming into the tournament, hosted by India, the Women in Blue were one of the top contenders.

However, mid-tournament, they suffered a minor setback, losing three consecutive matches. However, this is where India’s brilliant run began. They first beat the Kiwis to qualify for the semi-finals, and then stunned seven-time champions Australia in the semi-final.

They did so on the back of Jemimah Rodrigues’ sensational ton, to script their highest ever run-chase in Women’s ODIs. India finally capped off their remarkable run with a victory over South Africa, thanks to Shefali Verma’s all-round masterclass.

Deepti Sharma was named the player of the tournament for being the highest wicket-taker of the competition and providing valuable contributions with the bat down the order.

Indian women’s team nominated for 2026 Laureus World Award

After their massive success in India, the women’s team has now received another massive honor. They have been nominated for the 2026 Laureus World Team of the Year award.

This nomination is not just due to their on-field triumph, but also the teamwork, camaraderie, and sportsmanship among the players, as well as the leadership shown by captain Harmanpreet Kaur.

The Indian women’s ODI World Cup-winning team is one of the 6 teams nominated for this prestigious award. Oklahoma City Thunder, who won their first NBA title, and the England Women’s Football Team, who defended their European Championship with a shoot-out win against Spain, have also been nominated.

First-time UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain, the McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 Team, and the European Ryder Cup Team round up the nominees for the Laureus World Team of the Year award.
