IPL 2024: Captains of all 10 teams participating in the tournament
There are only two overseas captains in the ongoing IPL 2024.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) returned for the 17th season with the first match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on March 22 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. This season is certainly special because fans will see the end of some eras as there is mega auction planned ahead of the next year’s IPL.
Only four captains, namely Sanju Samson, Shikhar Dhawan, Faf du Plessis and KL Rahul are captaining their respective sides this season who also captained last season. Apart from them, other teams saw change in captaincy. Two players returned after a gap of one year, while four teams appointed new captains this year, about whom, we will talk here.
Here are the captains of all 10 teams participating in the IPL 2024:
10. Sunrisers Hyderabad – Pat Cummins:
Sunrisers Hyderabad are the one team that have seen four captains in the last 3–4 seasons. Aiden Markram led the team in 2023, but he has been replaced. The WTC and ODI World Cup-winning captain Pat Cummins will be leading SRH in the IPL 2024. This could turn out to be a game-changer for the franchise, which has been unable to make the top four since 2020. Cummins comes with immense leadership skills and is a proven captain at the international level.
9. Royal Challengers Bengaluru – Faf Du Plessis:
This is the third successive season for Faf Du Plessis as the captain of Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He has been a proactive captain, and RCB has done well under him. With his experience, he will look to take his team to the top four, at least in the IPL 2024. With RCB women’s team winning the WPL, RCB men’s can also make the 2024 edition memorable, and Du Plessis can become the first captain to lead the franchise to an IPL title.
8. Rajasthan Royals – Sanju Samson:
The ongoing edition is the fourth season for Sanju Samson as the leader of Rajasthan Royal. He led them to the finals in 2022, but unfortunately ended on the wrong side. RR did well in 2023 as well, but because of the NRR, they couldn’t make it to the playoffs. Hence, Samson will have a big task on his hands because he is one of the most experienced captains in the current lot.
7. Punjab Kings – Shikhar Dhawan:
Veteran Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan is leading Punjab Kings for the third time in a row. The Southpaw has been a good leader, but luck hasn’t been on his side. However, this season can be a game-changing one for them because they have some exciting players. Dhawan is in the last phase of his career, so this could be the final season for him as the captain of PBKS.
6. Mumbai Indians – Hardik Pandya:
Hardik Pandya has taken the responsibility to lead the five-time champions Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2024. He was traded in by MI from Gujarat Titans and he replaced Rohit Sharma at the helm before the season started. Hardik has achieved success as an IPL captain, and that’s what the Mumbai-based franchise lacked in the last few seasons. It is to be seen if Hardik can lead the side to their sixth IPL title.
5. Kolkata Knight Riders – Shreyas Iyer:
Shreyas Iyer is back after missing out on the last season in 2023. In his absence, Nitish Rana led KKR, but Iyer has taken back his responsibility. Iyer has seen many ups and downs in the last six months, and an IPL win can certainly heal all those scares he had. He is being assisted by Gautam Gambhir, who led KKR to two IPL title wins. So a third title looks very close for KKR under Iyer.
4. Lucknow Super Giants – KL Rahul:
KL Rahul has been an injury-prone cricketer and even missed half of the IPL 2023 due to injury, and Krunal Pandya led the team. But Rahul is fully fit to lead Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL 2024, which will be a confidence booster for the team. Rahul has been leading the franchise since its inception, and LSG have done well under him with two consecutive playoff appearances.
3. Gujarat Titans – Shubman Gill
Gujarat Titans traded Hardik to MI and made Shubman Gill their new captain. This is certainly a bold move by the franchise, which has been pretty successful in the last two seasons. Gill has brilliant support from some senior players like Kane Williamson, Matthew Wade, and David Miller, who have captained international sides, so he can surely learn from them and do well for the franchise.
2. Delhi Capitals – Rishabh Pant:
Wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant is finally back after missing the action for more than a year since his car accident in December 2022 and made return as captain of the franchise as well. DC should draw inspiration from Pant’s fighting comeback and fill their cabinet with their first ever IPL trophy this year.
1. Chennai Super Kings – Ruturaj Gaikwad:
The biggest news of the ongoing IPL 2024 is that of MS Dhoni stepping down as five-time IPL winners CSK and hand it over to Ruturaj Gaikwad. Gaikwad has been a consistent performer for the Yellow Army for the past three to four season, and he has grown as a leader since then. Gaikwad also has experience leading India and his domestic sides, but it will be interesting to see how he will lead a successful franchise like CSK.
