IPL 2024: Matheesha Pathirana pens emotional note after getting ruled out of the remainder of the tournament
Matheesha Pathirana’s IPL 2024 ended with 13 wickets in six games for CSK.
Matheesha Pathirana, the Sri Lankan pacer, has penned a touching note after he was forced to leave the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 mid-way due to a hamstring niggle. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pacer was one of the brightest stars for the franchise in this tournament.
Matheesha Pathirana was their second-highest wicket-taker in the IPL 2024, with 13 wickets in six games, one fewer than Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman, who took 14 wickets in nine games.
However, Pathirana had missed CSK’s encounters against Punjab Kings, and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad had claimed after the toss that the Sri Lankan had a hamstring complaint. He was replaced by Richard Gleeson, an England pacer making his IPL debut.
On May 5, 2024, CSK announced on their website that star pacer Matheesha Pathirana would return to Sri Lanka to continue his recovery from a hamstring injury that had kept him out of play for the last week of the IPL 2024.
It’s a big loss for the reigning champions, who had depended heavily on Pathirana to slow the flow of runs in the last overs and capture crucial wickets under duress.
“Matheesha Pathirana is nursing a hamstring injury and will be returning to Sri Lanka for further recovery. Chennai Super Kings wishes Pathirana a quick recovery,” CSK had said in a statement on Sunday.

Pathirana had also missed CSK’s return game against Punjab Kings, which they won comfortably due to Ravindra Jadeja’s brilliance with both the bat and the ball. The pacer flew back home to Sri Lanka and will continue to recover from the hamstring injury as he is in contention for Sri Lanka’s ICC T20 World Cup 2024 squad.
Sri Lanka are yet to name their squad and now with the talented pacer on the road to recovery, they might want to hold off on naming the squad.
Meanwhile, Pathirana took to Instagram and shared a heartfelt message, wishing to see the IPL 2024 trophy in CSK dressing room.
He posted: “A hard goodbye with my only wish to see the 2024 IPL champion trophy in CSK’s room soon! Grateful to the CSK team for all the blessings and love from Chennai.”
