IPL 2024: CSK qualification scenario explained

CSK are currently 3rd on the points table with 7 wins and 6 losses in 13 games with 14 points.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will be one of the teams in focus as the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is almost near its business end with teams grappling for the playoff spots to extend their tournament and have a shot at the title.
The Kolkata Knight Riders were the first side to qualify from the league phase, followed by the Rajasthan Royals, who earned a spot following Lucknow Super Giants’ loss against Delhi Capitals on Tuesday.
At the other end of the table, the Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians have been eliminated from contention, with the Gujarat Titans following suit when their match against KKR was rained out.
The five surviving teams will compete for the final two berths until Sunday when the league phase concludes.
Here is what Chennai Super Kings need to do to qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs
Chennai Super Kings are currently placed third on the points table with 7 wins from 13 games and 6 losses. They have 14 points to their name and NRR of 0.528. They have been helped immensely by Lucknow Super Giants’ loss to Delhi Capitals the other night.
Chennai are set to face Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Saturday in a blockbuster match. And all they need to do is win the match and earn two valuable points. SRH are the only team that can force CSK down the points table, and with 16 points, CSK cannot go below fourth place. However, a loss against RCB will complicate things for CSK.
If CSK lose against RCB on Saturday, they will remain on 14 points. Assuming their margin of defeat exceeds 18 runs (assuming RCB bats first and scores 200 runs), they will overtake CSK in the points rankings.
In such a situation, CSK will hope that SRH loses their final two games, and both CSK and RCB will advance to the playoffs.
