IPL 2024 will begin from 22nd March, 2024.

The 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will begin on 22nd March with a high-voltage encounter between defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. This will be a spectacle to watch as two of the biggest Indian stars MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli will be back in action.

Ahead of the IPL 2024, few teams have gone for an overhaul in their camp. Few have changed their leadership group, while few made changes to their support staff. Only one coach has managed to continue his association with same side consistently in the IPL history. On that note, let’s take a look at head coaches of all 10 teams participating in the IPL 2024.

Here’s the list of head coaches of all 10 teams participating in the IPL 2024:

1. Chennai Super Kings – Stephen Fleming:

Stephen Fleming is one of the most successful coaches in the IPL history. Fleming has so far won five titles as Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) head coach. Fleming also coached Rising Pune Supergiants for two seasons when CSK were suspended and even guided RPS to finals of the IPL 2017. Fleming, a former player of CSK, has been associated with the franchise from season one.

2. Mumbai Indians – Mark Boucher:

Former South African wicket-keeper Mark Boucher joined Mumbai Indians (MI) in September 2022 and since then, he has been serving as the team’s head coach. Mark Boucher did bring an impact during MI’s campaign in the IPL 2023 and helped the team qualify for playoffs after 10th place finish in IPL 2022. Mark Boucher also served as head coach of the South African National Cricket team before joining MI. Former South African wicket-keeper Mark Boucher started his coaching career in 2016.

3. Kolkata Knight Riders – Chandrakant Pandit:

Following Brendon McCullum’s exit after IPL 2022, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) roped in Chandrakant Pandit as their head coach. Pandit has been associated with the side since IPL 2023. Pandit is a well-known strategist in Indian domestic cricket and is widely credited for making Vidarbha and Madhya Pradesh Ranji Trophy champions recently. Pandit even represented India in five tests and 36 ODIs from 1986 to 1992. It will be interesting to see Pandit can help KKR win the IPL after 10 years.

4. Rajasthan Royals – Kumar Sangakkara :

Former Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara is serving as Director of Cricket Operations and head coach of the Rajasthan Royals (RR). Kumar Sangakkara joined RR camp in 2021 and took the side to finals in the IPL 2022. RR are now a force to reckon with. Kumar Sangakkara has magnificent numbers as a batter in international cricket.

5. Sunrisers Hyderabad – Daniel Vettori:

Former New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori was appointed as head coach of the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) replacing Brian Lara after end of IPL 2023. SRH ousted Brian Lara following their debacle in the IPL 2023. Daniel Vettori has a big responsibility as SRH will be aiming at their second IPL title. Daniel Vettori was previously associated with RCB in the IPL.

6. Gujarat Titans – Ashish Nehra:

Ashish Nehra is probably the most loved coach in the IPL. Gujarat Titans (GT) made their IPL debut in the IPL 2022 and former Indian pace bowler Ashish Nehra has been associated with the franchise from the beginning. Under Nehra’s coaching sting, GT won the IPL in their inaugural season in 2022 and then again reached finals of the subsequent IPL in 2023. It will be interesting to see how Nehra operates along with new captain Shubman Gill in IPL 2024.

7. Punjab Kings – Sanjay Bangar:

Trevor Bayliss replaced Anil Kumble as Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) head coach following Kumble’s exit after IPL 2022. Bayliss has been an active coach in the IPL and was part of KKR when they won IPL in 2012 and 2014. He later joined forces SRH in 2020 and 2021 seasons, but he couldn’t make much impact with them. Under Bayliss’ coaching, PBKS finished at eighth position in the IPL 2023. It is to be seen how he operates this time around.

8. Royal Challengers Bangalore – Andy Flower:

Former Zimbabwe wicket-keeper Andy Flower was appointed as head coach of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in August 2023. Flower was previously associated with PBKS and LSG. Following IPL 2023, LSG parted ways with Flower and then RCB roped the former Zimbabwean wicket-keeper as their head coach. It is to be seen if Flower can help RCB win their maiden IPL trophy.

9. Delhi Capitals – Ricky Ponting:

Delhi Capitals (DC) had a poor outing in IPL 2023 and finished at ninth position in the points table. Former Australian captain and current DC coach Ricky Ponting will have a big responsibility of raking DC to their first ever IPL title win this time around. Ponting has been associated with DC from 2018 and it will be his seventh year with the franchise as head coach. Ponting previously served as head coach of MI as well.

10. Lucknow Super Giants – Justin Langer:

Former Australian opener Justin Langer was appointed as head coach of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in August last year. LSG had a overhaul in their support staff and Justin Langer will lead a new team as their head coach. This is the first ever assignment for Justin Langer as coach of any IPL side, previously he served as coach of the Australian senior men’s cricket team.
