The third match of IPL 2024 was played at the Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata on Saturday evening. Put to bat first by Pat Cummins-led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) were off to a quick start as explosive opener Phil Salt hammered left-arm pacer Marco Jansen for three successive in the second over.
However, SRH came back quickly and took control, pushing KKR to 51/4 in 7.3 overs at one stage. Salt made 40 balls for 54 runs, leaving the home side at 119/6 in 13.5 overs. However, hard hitter Andre Russell showed his class towards the end with an unbeaten 64 off 25 balls to lift KKR to 208/7 in 20 overs.
While chasing 209 runs, openers Mayank Agarwal and Abhishek Sharma gave SRH a quick start by scoring 60 runs inside five overs. However, pacer Harshit Rana gave KKR their first breakthrough. He took the wicket of the dangerous Mayank, who departed after scoring 32 runs.
Left-handed batter Abhishek played a good cameo as he notched up 32 runs off just 19 balls before getting dismissed by Andre Russell. The home side took wickets at regular intervals as they dented the SRH batting line-up. At one stage, visitors were at 111-4 in 12.5 overs.
