IPL 2024 updated points table after match 4 & 5, RR vs LSG & GT vs MI
RR and GT won their respective games against LSG and MI on Sunday in the IPL 2024.
In the fourth match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) vice-captain Nicholas Pooran’s 63 and captain KL Rahul’s 58 went in vain as Rajasthan Royals (RR) crushed Super Giants by 20 runs at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on March 24.
After electing to bat first, RR skipper Sanju Samson smashed an unbeaten 82 runs and added a crucial partnership of 93 runs with hard hitter Riyan Parag for the third wicket as the hosts posted 193/4 in 20 overs.
Parag, who came in at No. 4 smashed crucial 43 runs during his stay at the crease. However, in an attempt to pull a short ball over a deep backward square leg, Parag holed out to substitute fielder Deepak Hooda.
Chasing the target of 194, LSG struggled early in the innings as RR left-arm pacer Trent Boult struck twice in his first two overs dismissing Quinton de Kock and Devdutt Padikkal.
After the early setback, Deepak Hooda and skipper Rahul steadied LSG’s ship as they finished the powerplay at 47 for 3. Wily leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal struck in his first over by dismissing Hooda, who scored 26 off 13 deliveries. Then, Lucknow reached 76 for 4 at the halfway mark.
Rahul, meanwhile reached his fifty in 35 balls. However, he was he was dismissed by Sandeep Sharma when he was at 58. At the end, Sandeep bowled a brilliant 19th over, giving just 11 overs, leaving Avesh Khan to defend 27 in the final six balls. In the end Giants lost the match by 20 runs.
What happened in fifth match of IPL 2024 between GT and MI?
The fifth match of the IPL 2024 was played between the Mumbai Indians (MI) and Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, on Sunday. MI skipper Hardik Pandya opted to field first against Shubman Gill’s Titans.
Young left-handed batter B Sai Sudharsan top-scored with a crucial knock of 45 off 39 balls, while Rahul Tewatia played a quick-fire knock of 22 runs down the order. While newly appointed GT skipper Gill scored 31 off 22 balls,.
However, it was MI pacer Jasprit Bumrah who stole the show in the first innings. In his first IPL game in two years, Bumrah first dismantled Titans opener Wriddhiman Saha’s defense with a sheer yorker, which knocked off the middle stump.
Bumrah then dismissed David Miller and Sudharsan in the 17th over in a space of three deliveries. His spell of 3/14 in four overs restricted the Titans to 168/6 in 20 overs.
While defending a stiff target of 169, debutant Azmatullah Omarzai gave GT a perfect start as he dismissed Mumbai opener Ishan Kishan in the very first over. Kishan got dismissed on a duck and was caught behind by wicket-keeper Saha.
MI’s No. 3, Naman Dhir, played cameo of 20 runs in 10 balls before Omarzai dismissed him as well. At the end of powerplay, GT restricted the visitors to 52/2. However, Rohit Sharma along with Dewald Brevis added a crucial 77-run stand for the third wicket before Rohit got dismissed for 43.
In the 16th over, GT ace pacer Mohit Sharma changed the momentum by picking up the wicket of dangerous Brvis, who smashed 46 runs. Mohit once again came to bowl in the crucial 18th over, and he took the wicket of Tim David.
However, in the 20th over, needing 19 runs, MI captain Hardik Pandya stuck two boundaries off Umesh Yadav, but the GT pacer came back and dismissed Pandya with a well-directed bouncer and then dismissed Piyush Chawla as well to help his side win by six runs.
IPL 2024: Updated points table:
Following their win over LSG, RR find themselves at top spot in the points table with two points and NRR of +1.000. Defending champions occupy second spot with two points and NRR of +0.779. PBKS, GT and KKR, occupy third, fourth and fifth spots respectively with two points each.
MI, SRH, DC, RCB and LSG are yet to open their account in the IPL 2024 points table and find themselves at bottom half of the table with no points and NRR of -0.200, -0.300, -0.455, -0.779 and -1.000 respectively.
What’s next in IPL 2024 ?
On Monday, 25th March, Royal Challengers Bengaluru will take on the Punjab Kings at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. In match six, Faf du Plessis will lead the RCB side while Shikhar Dhawan will take the leadership responsibilities of PBKS side. du Plessis’ RCB lost their opening match against Chennai Super Kings while Dhawan’s PBKS emerged victorious against Delhi Capitals in their first match of the season.
