On April 18, the Mumbai Indians (MI) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) played the 33rd match of the IPL 2024 campaign. The Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur hosted the match. PBKS captain Sam Curran won the toss and decided to bowl first. Ishan Kishan was dismissed for eight runs early on, but Rohit Sharma (36) and Suryakumar Yadav contributed 81 runs for the second wicket to set a solid foundation for the MI hitters.

Suryakumar Yadav scored 78 runs in 53 balls, including three sixes and seven fours. Tilak Varma scored 34* runs, while Tim David added 14 runs as MI reached 192/7 in 20 overs. Harshal Patel’s three wickets in the 20th over helped PBKS regain some momentum. Punjab Kings had a horror start to their chase as Gerald Coetzee removed Prabhsimran Singh for a golden duck in the first over. Then Jasprit Bumrah rattled the PBKS top-order with wickets of Rilee Russouw and Sam Curran.

PBKS were reduced to 77/6 in no time, but then Shashank Singh (41 in 25 balls) and Ashutosh Sharma got together to do the rescue act once again. Ashutosh proved to be the star of the PBKS innings, as he made 61 in 28 balls with seven sixes and two fours, but he got out with PBKS needing 25 runs. In the end, despite the best efforts of the tail, PBKS failed to cross the finish line and were bowled out for 182 in 19.1 overs. MI won a thrilling contest by just nine runs.
