Mohammed Siraj made his return to RCB XI after being rested for the Sunrisers Hyderabad match at home.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) bowler Mohammed Siraj has shown concern about the impact player rule in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 and asked the management to remove the rule citing conditions and the harmful impact of the ruling.

The impact player rule was first introduced in the Big Bash League and was adopted by the IPL starting from the IPL 2023 edition. The impact substitute rule allows franchises to nominate five substitutes in addition to their starting lineup prior to a match.

After the match begins, the leaders of both teams may suggest any of these five substitutions to replace one of the starting XI players during any of the game’s breaks. These include the start of an innings, the end of an over, the fall of a wicket, and a batter’s departure.

However, if a bowling side brings on an Impact Player after a wicket falls or if a batter retires in the middle of an over, the incoming substitute is not permitted to deliver the remaining balls of the over.

“Please remove this impact sub thing”- Mohammed Siraj

Mohammed Siraj, the RCB pacer, wants the impact sub-rule removed. The impact substitute rule has sparked much debate in the IPL, with critics pointing out how it limits the potential of all-rounders in the side, among other issues.

“It’s important to be comfortable, if you think too much, it’ll lead to negativity and frustrations, so I always try to be as positive as possible, try to close all negative connotations around me. Please remove this impact sub thing (laughs), the wickets are already flat and there’s nothing for the bowlers in it, previously, it used to be slow at times, but the batters now come out swinging at absolutely everything.

My game plan is to be consistent, if a good ball gets hit, so be it. It was a long time that teams made 250+, but it has become such a common feature now (thanks to impact sub and the flat pitches). It’s been a long time since I’ve played a day game, I last played a day game during the Test series against England, but we’re professionals and we have no excuses,” Mohammed Siraj said ahead of the KKR v RCB game.

Even former MI captain Rohit Sharma has spoken against the impact player rule, stating that it is hindering the progress of all-rounders.
