Shreyas Iyer will captain Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL 2024.

India batter Shreyas Iyer is set to join the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) camp for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) and reports have suggested that his back injury issues are of no concern.

While some rumors suggest that he may miss a few games at the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL), concerned officials have stated that his participation in the IPL is not jeopardized. Interestingly, Iyer did not take the field during Vidarbha’s second innings on the fourth and fifth days of the just-ended Ranji Trophy 2023-24 final.

After scoring 95 runs in the second innings of the Ranji final, Iyer reported back pain and had scans.

According to sources within the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), the scan results are inconclusive, and the final diagnosis will be determined once the MCA receives communication from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

However, the Mumbai team manager confirmed to Cricbuzz that Shreyas Iyer has no concerns and will soon join the KKR camp. “There is no cause for concern; he is fine and will be going to Kolkata for the pre-IPL camp in two days,” stated Mumbai team manager Bhushan Patil.

BCCI mulling giving Shreyas Iyer his central contract back

It is now evident that Iyer had a bad back when he missed the Ranji Trophy quarter-finals, albeit the NCA did not notice any problems at the time. His choice to skip the quarter-finals resulted in his removal from the central contract list, as well as widespread criticism that he was reportedly preferring the IPL above domestic cricket.

Despite missing the quarter-finals owing to a back injury, Iyer played in the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 semi-finals and final.

There are suggestions that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may review its decision to remove Iyer from the contract list, with some speculating that he may be reinstated. When asked about this, a senior BCCI official indicated that no decision had been made, but he did not dismiss the rumor.
