IPL 2024 will begin on March 22 with a clash between CSK and RCB in Chennai.
Ahead of the upcoming 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024), a few media reports have emerged saying a new technology will be introduce to assist umpires, i.e., ‘Smart Replay System’ for quicker and more accurate reviews during the matches. Earlier the England Cricket Board (ECB) had tested a similar referral system in The Hundred tournament.
The main idea of this new technology is to increase the speed and accuracy of the decision-making process, as there will be more split screens and better frame rates at the upcoming showpiece event.
The biggest change from the previous IPL’s technology is that the TV director will no longer be involved in the conversation between the third umpire and the Hawk-eye operator.
As per reports, the Smart Replay System will see the TV umpires receiving direct input from the Hawk-Eye operators, who will be sitting in the same room to help the umpires with the images captured by eight Hawk-Eye hi speec cameras all around the stadium during the IPL.
The report further confirmed that the Smart Replay System will also allow TV umpires to have more visuals to arrive at a particular decision, which also includes split-screen images.
BCCI conducted a two-day workshop on the Smart Replay System ahead of IPL 2024
As per ESPNcricinfo, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also conducted a two-day workshop on the Smart Replay System with approximately 15 umpires. Both Indians and overseas umpires were included in that two-day workshop organized by the Indian cricketing body, who are likely to operate the new technology during the entire IPL 2024.
The implementation of the new system underscores IPL’s commitment to the betterment of the game. The Smart Replay System might minimize many controversies during the matches.
With the new IPL season just around the corner, this new system will build a lot more hype ahead of the mega tournament, as cricket fans will be eager to see how the new technology works during a game.
