Suresh Raina was MS Dhoni’s trusted deputy in the Chennai Super Kings camp.
Every cricket fan was expecting MS Dhoni to announce his retirement at the end of IPL 2023. It would have been a fitting end to veteran Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni’s career as Chennai won record-equalling fifth IPL title defeating Gujarat Titans at Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad. But the tables turned as Dhoni decided to give his fans one more year of entertainment.
It is likely that MS Dhoni will be announcing his retirement after the end of IPL 2024. However, Dhoni’s former CSK teammate Suresh Raina has expressed his desire that Dhoni should play for at least 2-3 more years. Raina was part of the CSK side till IPL 2021. Former Indian skipper Dhoni made a huge impact on Raina’s cricketing career.
Suresh Raina expresses his desire
Former CSK vice-captain Suresh Raina said that the upcoming IPL season will be important for Chennai. Raina said, “This year is probably more important for CSK than MS Dhoni, we will see who he is going to select as his deputy and probably say, ‘You handle this now. I’ve been looking after the team since 2008’. He is 42 years old now. I would like to see him play for five more years or at least 2-3 years.”
CSK tried all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja as captain during the IPL 2022 but CSK had a troubled season under his leadership. MS Dhoni had to take back the leadership of the CSK when they were languishing at the bottom of the points table. However, before the IPL 2024, CSK handed over captaincy reins to young opener Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Ahead of the IPL 2024, CSK are dealing with multiple injury concerns. Opener Devon Conway and fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana, who contributed immensely during last season’s title win, have been ruled out at least for first half of the tournament owing to respective injuries. Defending champions will kick-off their IPL 2024 campaign against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on March 22 in Chennai.
