IPL 2024: Why Sanju Samson was fined after losing in RR vs GT match?

Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan Royals lost their first game of the season.
Sanju Samson, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain, didn’t have a very good night on Wednesday, as his team lost a game they should’ve won against Gujarat Titans (GT) in Jaipur. And to top of it, he was fined by the IPL as well.
The Royals were defeated by the Titans by three wickets on Wednesday, April 10, at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, ending their impressive four-match winning streak in IPL 2024. Nonetheless, RR are the top team in the points rankings, ahead of the Kolkata Knight Riders.
RR were early in command as they defended 197 runs for their fifth consecutive victory. However, Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan put together a crucial 39-run stand from 15 balls for the seventh wicket. Rashid hit a boundary on the final ball to spoil RR’s unbeaten streak this season.
RR captain Sanju Samson fined for slow overrate
Sanju Samson has been fined Rs 12 lakh for not maintaining the required overrate. RR were penalized for falling five minutes behind the cut-off time, resulting in an on-field penalty during the last over. Avesh Khan has the difficult challenge of defending 15 runs with only four fielders on the boundary.
The Rajasthan Royals captain received a punishment for his team’s slow overrate against the Titans. According to a statement released by IPL, Sanju Samson was fined Rs 12 lakhs for the team’s first infringement of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct on minimum over-rate violations.
“As it was his team’s first offense of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offenses, Samson was fined ₹12 lakhs,” a release from the IPL stated.
Previously, DC captain Rishabh Pant (twice) and GT captain Shubman Gill were fined earlier in the season for the same offense. Since this is RR’s first breach this season, only the captain was fined.
However, if the team commits the same offense again, the captain’s fine will be doubled, and the players included in playing XI will also be fined, with the captain facing a match ban after the third incident.
