Gerald Coetzee was released by Mumbai Indians before the IPL 2025 mega auction.

South African pace sensation Gerald Coetzee has been released by Mumbai Indians (MI) ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction.

Coetzee was picked by MI for INR 5 crores at the IPL 2024 auction and made his debut last season. The exciting young fast bowler showed his potential by picking up 13 wickets in 10 games at a bowling average of 26 and economy of 10.18 runs per overs.

Coetzee’s skills in the shortest format go beyond his raw pace. The Proteas fast bowler is also a handy lower-order batsman, capable of clearing the boundary ropes and contributing to the team’s total in the death overs.

On that note, let’s look at three teams who might target him in the upcoming mega auction at Jeddah.

Three teams who might target Gerald Coetzee in IPL 2025 mega auction.

1. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

KKR’s home ground, Eden Gardens, is regarded as one of the most pace-friendly venues in India. Coetzee’s potential arrival at Kolkata would see him partner Harshit Rana, who was one of the league’s breakthrough talents last season.

The bouncy nature of Eden Gardens’ surface will further assist Coetzee, who is known for his well-directed bouncers. In the case of his potential arrival, Coetzee can also provide depth to KKR’s explosive batting lineup.

2. Punjab Kings (PBKS)

Retaining only two players before the mega auction, Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh, the Punjab Kings will head into the mega auction with the aim of rebuilding their squad almost from scratch. If bought, Coetzee can serve as a foundational block for Punjab’s new-look bowling lineup.

Long side boundaries of Mullanpur will suit Coetzee’s natural short-of-length bowling style if PBKS rope in the South African speedster.

3. Mumbai Indians (MI)

Having been part of the MI squad last season, Coetzee is already familiar with the franchise’s culture. And MI could look to buy him back.

Coetzee’s potential return to MI would see him partner with Jasprit Bumrah, forming one of the most deadly bowling attacks in the tournament.

The red soil of the Wankhede pitch will suit Gerald’s bowling style, with Wankhede’s bounce resembling home conditions with the South African youngster. Additionally, Coetzee can also add value to MI’s lower-order batting, a problem they encountered last season.
