IPL 2025 mega auction: 3 teams who might target Jos Buttler
Jos Buttler was released by Rajasthan Royals before the IPL 2025 mega auction.
One of the most surprising moves made by a franchise ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction was the release of Jos Buttler by Rajasthan Royals (RR). Known for his explosive batting, Buttler has represented two franchises in his IPL career so far – Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals.
Joining the franchise in 2018, Buttler has been pivotal in Rajasthan’s batting lineup. Representing RR, England’s limited-overs captain won the Orange Cap in IPL 2022, scoring 863 runs and guiding Rajasthan to the runners-up finish.
Buttler’s 360-degree hitting ability makes him one of the most difficult batsmen to bowl to in white-ball cricket.
Buttler has an enviable ability to change gears at any moment. On many occasions in T20 cricket, he has batted for long and even finished games. His vast experience and success are likely to trigger a bidding war in the upcoming mega auction. Apart from his match-winning ability with the bat, Buttler adds value as a wicket-keeper and is also a leader.
On that note, let’s look at the three teams who might target Jos Buttler at the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Three teams who might target Jos Buttler in the IPL 2025 mega auction
1. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)
The batting-friendly nature of the Eden Gardens pitch makes Buttler a perfect fit for defending champions KKR. Buttler boasts an impressive record at the Eden Gardens in IPL: 276 runs at an average of 69 and a strike rate of 170.
Buttler played a terrific knock of 107* last season in Kolkata to guide RR to a remarkable two-wicket win. Buttler’s possible inclusion will allow KKR to form a dangerous opening duo with Sunil Narine.
2. Punjab Kings (PBKS)
Punjab Kings will go to the IPL 2025 mega auction with the chance of rebuilding almost their entire squad. With only two retentions, both uncapped Indians, Punjab have the biggest purse (INR 110.5 crores) among all the franchises.
Punjab will be on the hunt for an opening partner for Prabhsimran Singh, a captain to lead them, and a wicket-keeper as they have released Jitesh Sharma. All these three roles can be fulfilled by one man: Jos Buttler.
With Punjab having a huge purse available, they might go and seal Buttler’s services in the mega auction.
3. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)
Following the release of Faf Du Plessis, RCB will go into the auction looking for a reliable opener and a new skipper, unless Virat Kohli is willing to take the captaincy duties once again. Dinesh Karthik, their keeper in the last three seasons, has retired from IPL.
One name they could zero in on for these roles is Jos Buttler. The batting-friendly venue that is the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium will further aid Buttler’s suitability to the franchise.
Also, in case of a possible move, Buttler’s penchant to utilise the powerplay overs with a spate of boundaries will allow Virat Kohli to take his time.
