IPL 2025 mega auction: 3 teams who might target Mohammed Shami
Mohammed Shami was released by Gujarat Titans ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Ranked among one of the best fast bowlers of his generation, Mohammed Shami was released by Gujarat Titans (GT) before the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction.
Participating in the IPL since 2013, Shami has represented four franchises in his career – Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Delhi Capitals (DC), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Gujarat Titans (GT).
Shami played a vital role in GT’s title-winning campaign in the IPL 2022 season, picking up 20 wickets in 16 games. Throughout his IPL career, Shami has taken 127 wickets in 110 games at an impressive bowling average of 26 and an economy rate of 8.4 runs per over.
Shami’s knack for picking wickets at any stage of the game makes him one of the most valuable bowlers in the upcoming auction. On that note, let’s take a look at the three teams that might target the senior Indian fast bowler in the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Three teams who might target Mohammed Shami in the IPL 2025 mega auction:
1. Punjab Kings (PBKS)
Retaining only two players before the mega auction, the Punjab Kings will be rebuilding almost their full squad at the mega auction, and they could pick Shami to be their pace spearhead. If bought, Shami’s experience will help PBKS in their revamp process.
Having represented the franchise in the past, Shami’s arrival will provide PBKS with the much-needed experience in the bowling attack. Furthermore, the long side boundaries of Mullanpur will aid Shami’s back-of-the-length bowling strategy.
2. Mumbai Indians (MI)
Having had the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, Mitchell Johnson and Lasith Malinga, Mumbai Indians have a history of having some of the best fast bowlers in the world on their side. An addition to this could be Shami.
Shami’s potential arrival at MI will pair him with Bumrah. Playing together, Shami and Bumrah have been highly successful for the Indian Cricket Team across formats.
If Shami is roped in by MI, he will enjoy bowling in the powerplay at the Wankhede Stadium, which is known for providing bounce and early movement to the seamers. The last time Shami played at the Wankhede, he registered record-breaking bowling figures of 7/57 against New Zealand in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
3. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)
Bowling in the death overs has been a persistent problem for RCB throughout their IPL history. Given his impressive record in death overs, Shami can prove to be an ideal option for the franchise.
Shami’s potential arrival at RCB would see him partner with Yash Dayal, offering a versatile left-arm and right-arm combination in the bowling attack. Furthermore, Shami’s experience can prove pivotal for young fast bowlers that RCB could pick in the mega auction.
