Jasprit Bumrah suffered a back injury in the fifth test of BGT 2024-25.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 will begin on March 22, Saturday, with the defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) facing Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

Five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) have been termed early favorites for the competition. The franchise has assembled a star-studded squad with a fearsome pace attack of Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah, and Deepak Chahar.

MI will start their IPL 2025 campaign on March 23, Sunday, against their arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. They had a disastrous campaign in IPL 2024, which saw them finishing at the bottom (10th) of the league stage with just eight points from 14 games.

Weeks before the start of the new season, recent reports suggest that the franchise will miss their premier speedster, Jasprit Bumrah, in the initial games.

Jasprit Bumrah to miss Mumbai Indians’ first three matches – Reports

According to a report in Times of India (TOI), Jasprit Bumrah is expected to miss the first two weeks of the IPL and may join the Mumbai Indians camp only in April.

If Bumrah misses two weeks of action, it will mean MI will be without their star pacer for the first three games. Earlier, Bumrah also missed out on India squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to back injury.

The 31-year-old has been undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Center of Excellence in Bengaluru.

Bumrah’s medical reports are okay. He has resumed bowling at the Centre of Excellence. However, it is unlikely he’ll be able to bowl at the start of the IPL in another fortnight. As per current status, the first week of April looks a more realistic date for him to get back to high-intensity cricket.” a BCCI source told TOI.

Notably, MI will also miss the services of captain Hardik Pandya in their first game of the tournament against CSK as he’s due for one match suspension for slow over-rate offense in the last season.
