The franchises can retain a maximum of six players through retentions and RTM options ahead of IPL 2025.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council announced the retention rules for the IPL 2025 mega auction on Saturday, September 28. There were other important decisions taken by the IPL GC regarding overseas players, the Impact Player rule, and they also brought back a rule for uncapped players that was scrapped in 2021.

Firstly, the IPL GC has allowed the franchise to retain a maximum of six players through retentions and the Right To Match (RTM) option for the upcoming mega auction. The six retentions/RTMs can have a maximum of five capped players (Indian & Overseas) and a maximum of two uncapped players

The decision has been left up to every franchise to choose their combination for retentions and RTMs for the auction.

What is the last date for franchises to announce retained players for the IPL 2025 mega auction?

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly set a deadline of 5 PM IST on October 31, 2024, for the franchises to submit the list of retained players for the mega auction. Further, according to Cricbuzz, the BCCI has decided that a player who makes his international debut on or before October 31, 2024, will be considered a capped player in the 2025 mega auction.

The purse for each team has been increased to INR 120 crores for the upcoming mega auction, increased from INR 100 crores from the previous action.

Another key decision that the IPL GC made was introducing match fees for the first time in the history of the tournament. The landmark decision was confirmed by Jay Shah.

“In a historic move to celebrate consistency and champion outstanding performances in the IPL, we are thrilled to introduce a match fee of INR 7.5 lakhs per game for our cricketers! A cricketer playing all league matches in a season will get Rs. 1.05 crores in addition to his contracted amount. Each franchise will allocate INR 12.60 crores as match fees for the season! This is a new era for the IPL and our players!” Shah wrote on Twitter.
