IPL 2025 mega auction: 3 openers CSK might target to buy
CSK released Devon Conway ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will enter the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction looking for a reliable opener. Having released Devon Conway, and also Rachin Ravindra who could be versatile enough to bat anywhere in the top four, CSK will be hunting for an opener in the mega auction to partner captain Ruturaj Gaikwad in IPL 2025.
CSK have been home to many legendary openers including Matthew Hayden, Michael Hussey, Faf Du Plessis, Brendon McCullum, and Shane Watson.
The five-time title winners have maintained their core by retaining five key players: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Matheesha Pathirana, Shivam Dube and MS Dhoni.
The Super Kings finished fifth in what was an underwhelming IPL 2024 season for them. While the franchise has always found its way back to the top, this mega auction presents a new challenge for CSK with a focus on squad rebuilding.
In this article, we will look at three openers that CSK might target in the upcoming mega auction.
Three openers CSK might target in the IPL 2025 auction:
1. Ishan Kishan
Known for his flamboyant batting style, Kishan would be a great fit in Chennai’s top order. Kishan’s potential arrival will help CSK form a left-right opening pair with Ruturaj Gaikwad. Ishan is known for taking on the bowlers from first over which will further suit Gaikwad’s anchor role.
With MS Dhoni nearing the end of his career, Kishan could also serve as a long-term wicket-keeping option for the franchise.
2. David Warner
One of the greatest ever players to embrace the IPL, David Warner brings vast experience to the table. If bought, Warner can also contribute to CSK’s think tank by supporting Gaikwad.
Known for his fitness, Warner’s potential inclusion will greatly improve CSK’s lacklustre ground fielding. Warner is the fourth-highest run-scorer in IPL history and the highest among overseas batsmen with 6565 runs. He has struck 62 fifties and four centuries in the league.
3. Faf Du Plessis
One of CSK’s most successful openers, Faf Du Plessis has an impeccable track record with the franchise. Du Plessis has scored over 2500 runs for the Chennai-based franchise at an average of 35 and a strike rate of 133.
His knowledge of the franchise’s dressing room culture and his bond with the fans would further strengthen his suitability for a possible return. Opening the batting together, du Plessis and Gaikwad formed the base of CSK’s title-winning campaign in 2021. Du Plessis’ potential return to the franchise will provide stability to CSK’s top order.
