IPL 2025 mega auction: Shreyas Iyer becomes most expensive player in IPL history, sold for a whopping 26.75 crores
Shreyas Iyer led KKR to the IPL 2024 trophy but was still released by the franchise.
Shreyas Iyer is one of the most prominent Indian names that was sold at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction.
The 29-year-old entered the mega auction pool after parting ways with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) despite leading the franchise to the title in IPL 2024. KKR CEO Venky Mysore revealed they wanted to retain Iyer but the player wished to test his market value in the mega auction.
Iyer has featured in all formats for India but currently finds himself out of the national side in tests and T20Is. He still remains a key cog at No. 4 in the ODI team.
He has an experience of over 200 T20 matches, 51 of which came in the India colors and 116 in the IPL.
Shreyas Iyer sold to PBKS for INR 26.75 crore
Shreyas Iyer became the most expensive player in IPL history as Punjab Kings (PBKS) bought him for INR 26.75 crore!
KKR and PBKS got into a bidding tussle for Iyer from his base price of INR 2 crore and stretched it INR 7.5 crore when DC entered the fray. As expected, DC bid fiercely for Iyer, who led them to the IPL 2020 final.
DC contested first with KKR and then PBKS returned to action. Their bidding war was an intense one as both teams require a new skipper and they went all the way to INR 26.75 crore with PBKS holding the bid and DC withdrawing.
Shreyas Iyer previously in the IPL
Iyer made his IPL debut in 2015 for Delhi Capitals (then Daredevils) and was with them until IPL 2021. Iyer led DC to their maiden IPL final in 2020, which they lost to Mumbai Indians.
He was roped in by KKR for INR 12.25 crore in the IPL 2022 mega auction and was named their new skipper. While in Iyer’s first season as KKR’s captain, the franchise finished 7th, he marched them to the title in IPL 2024, after missing the IPL 2023 season due to a back injury.
Iyer had an impressive IPL 2024 season with the bat as well, scoring 351 runs at an average of 39 and a strike rate of 146.
Overall, in his 116-match IPL career, Iyer has scored 3127 runs at an average of 32 with 21 fifties to his name.
