Washington Sundar was released by SRH ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.

One of the most talented spin-bowling all-rounders in India is Washington Sundar. Touted to carry forward the legacy of R Ashwin in test cricket, Sundar has made a great mark in the longest format in the few chances he’s got so far.

He was one of the heroes of India’s epic victory at the Gabba in 2021. The fact that it was his debut test speaks volumes of his temperament to thrive under high pressure. Recently, he was India’s best bowler in the home series against New Zealand, which India lost. He picked up 16 wickets in two tests at an average of only 14.12, outbowling even Ashwin.

While because of Ashwin’s presence, Sundar has played only in six tests so far, he’s got regular opportunities in white-ball formats for India. Sundar has featured in 22 ODIs and 52 T20Is, taking 70 wickets combined in the two formats.

Sundar is known for his tidy economy and accuracy while controlling the run-flow. He has an economy of 6.87 in T20Is and 4.70 in ODIs. He is also regularly used in the powerplay to left-handers.

GT roped in Washington Sundar for INR 3.2 crore in the mega auction after winning the bidding war with LSG.

Washington Sundar previously in the IPL

Sundar made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut in 2017 and has so far played for three franchises. He started his career with Rising Pune Supergiant in 2017 and then spent four seasons at Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

After being released by RCB, Sundar was roped in by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL 2022 mega auction for INR 8.75 crore, and after three seasons, he’s been let go by SRH.

Sundar hasn’t had the kind of success in the IPL that was expected of him. He’s taken 37 wickets in 60 matches and scored 378 runs. Last season, he got to play only two games, in which he picked up one wicket and leaked at an economy rate of 14.6 runs per over.
