The decision comes after PBKS vs DC match of IPL 2025 was halted midway in Dharamsala on Thursday.
A temporary suspension has been placed on the remaining Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 games. Following a high-stakes meeting of the senior brass of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the decision was made against the backdrop of increased border tensions between India and Pakistan.
Before this decision was made, it is understood that a number of options, including a potential venue change, were considered. All franchises and other stakeholders have received the notification, but a formal statement is still planned.
This comes after the Punjab Kings (PBKS) Vs. Delhi Capitals (DC) IPL 2025 match that was being played in Dharamsala’s Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association stadium on Thursday was suspended by the organizers. The match was halted when PBKS had played 10.1 overs, and the floodlights were shut off.
Earlier, it was thought to be a technical glitch, but later the crowd was evacuated from the stadium, and players and support staff also left soon after.
Not the right time to continue: IPL 2025 suspended as foreign players’ safety discussed
BCCI had gotten into an emergency meeting right after the PBKS vs DC match in Dharamsala was called off.
“We are monitoring the situation, seeking the government’s advice, and will take the final decision on the IPL tomorrow. The situation is changing day by day. We will do whatever we are told and inform all stakeholders. At the moment, our priority is the safety of all players, fans, and stakeholders,” BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla told The Indian Express.
Now, only an official statement is awaited, but the BCCI has decided to suspend the rest of IPL 2025 after consulting with the Indian government. It believes the time is not right for the tournament to go ahead and wants to ensure the safety of the players isn’t compromised.
And it is understood that they have decided to suspend the IPL for the time being.
“We are not sure about the future. Since there is a lot of ambiguity, we can’t say what is in store next. For the time being, we have to wait and watch,” sources on the board told The Indian Express.
Even with the Dharamsala abandonment, IPL 2025 is now 58 games old. Lucknow (2), Hyderabad, Ahmedabad (3), Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru (2), Mumbai, and Jaipur are the remaining 12 group stage matches. The playoffs were originally scheduled to take place in Hyderabad and Kolkata.
