IPL 2027: Gareth Batty likely to join CSK as batting coach
Zaheer Khan will lead CSK’s coaching staff in IPL 2027.
Former England off-spinner Gareth Batty is likely to join Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as their batting coach ahead of IPL 2027. After missing playoffs for the past two seasons, the franchise is making changes to its coaching staff, hoping to return to winning ways next year.
The 49-year-old played nine Tests, 10 ODIs and one T20I for England during his playing career. He also shares a good rapport with CSK head coach Zaheer Khan, as the two played together for Worcestershire.
According to Times of India, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that talks are underway with Batty. “We are in discussions with him. The negotiations are underway, and an announcement is likely in a couple of days.”

Batty guided Surrey to three consecutive County Championship titles before they finished second last year. Batty’s experience of working with players in English domestic cricket could prove useful for CSK as they prepare for the upcoming IPL season.
CSK have already appointed former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan as their head coach for IPL 2027, replacing Stephen Fleming. Fleming spent 16 years with the franchise and guided them to five IPL titles.
Former India pacer Mohit Sharma has also been confirmed as the team’s bowling coach. Zaheer recommended Mohit’s name for the role.
Chennai Super Kings won their fifth IPL title in 2023 but have struggled since then. They missed the playoffs in 2024 and finished last in 2025.
The franchise will look to make a strong comeback in IPL 2027. Although Chennai Super Kings have not officially announced Batty’s appointment, ongoing discussions suggest it will be announced soon.
