IPL brand value sees a huge jump from the previous season - Reports

IPL 2023 attracted almost 49,000 Crore rupees from media and broadcasting rights.

The BCCI's big money league, Indian Premier League has seen an increase in its brand value massively after the recently concluded IPL 2023 season. The 10-team tournament has been a successful event for the board since its inception. A global investment Bank, Houlihan Lokey Inc. issued a report on the brand Indian Premier League. In IPL’s brand study, it was found that IPL’s brand value has increased by 80% from what it was after IPL 2022. After the end of the 2022 season, it was valued at around 1.8 Billion US $. Now, after the end of IPL 2023 it has jumped up to 3 Billion US $. IPL attracted almost 49,000 Crore rupees from the media and broadcasting rights. 

Media and Broadcasting right played their part

The report stated that the surge in IPL’s brand value was mainly because of the way IPL media and broadcasting rights have attracted money toward the league. That was many folds higher than the previous amount the league got from the official broadcasters from 2018-23. The Walt-Disney paid only 16,300 Crores in 2017 for the next five years. IPL’s broadcasting fee has crossed the value of various other leagues around the world in different sports. IPL has left NBA, EPL, Bundesliga, and NFL way behind in terms of broadcasting per match basis. 

Chennai Super Kings have got the biggest brand value calculations among all the IPL teams. CSK’s brand value has reached around 212 Billion US $ after winning the IPL 2023, while in 2022 it was around 146 Billion US $. Harsh Talikoti, the senior vice president of Corporate valuation advisory services at Houlihan Lokey has said, “Created on the American style of franchise-based system of hiring players, the IPL has established as a hugely lucrative sports league, along similar lines as the NFL and the NBA”.
