Jasprit Bumrah sustained a back injury during the Sydney test of BGT 2024-25.
Mumbai Indians (MI) have extended their unwanted record of losing the opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) every year since 2012.
The five-time winners were outclassed by arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their opening match in Chennai, losing by four wickets. Despite posting a low total of 155 runs, the team showed fight in their last-over defeat.
They will now head to Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad for their second match of the season on Saturday, March 29 against Gujarat Titans (GT).
MI’s head coach, Mahela Jayawardene, has now provided an injury update on their premium fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah.

Speaking to the media before MI’s next match against GT, coach Mahela Jayawardene confirmed that Bumrah will not be available for the fixture.
Bumrah said, “Everyone is available except for Bumrah. Like I said in my last interview as well, it’s on a daily basis that he’s going through his program.“
He further elaborated, emphasizing that while Bumrah’s recovery is progressing well, there is no specific timeline for his return.
“So far, everything seems okay. But there were no timelines given by NCA, so we’ll wait on that.”
Earlier, Bumrah sustained a back injury during the fifth and final test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 in Sydney, which ruled him out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in February.
Bumrah has since been undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, formerly the National Cricket Academy (NCA), in Bengaluru. As part of his long recovery process, the 31-year-old was also forced to miss the IPL 2025 opener.
Upon his return, he will join Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar in MI’s fast bowling attack.
