IPL playoffs: How have MI fared in the playoffs over the years?

Mumbai Indians have qualified for the playoffs in 11 seasons of the IPL.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) was first held in 2008. Over the last 18 seasons, the tournament has thrilled cricket fans with exciting matches. Mumbai Indians (MI) are one of the teams that have been part of every edition.
MI have been a dominant side in the tournament over the years. They have won the joint-highest number of five titles, sharing the record with their rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Under Rohit Sharma‘s leadership, MI won the IPL trophies in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. Hardik Pandya has led the side since the 2024 season.
MI are also a powerful side when it comes to qualifying for the playoffs. The five-time champions have qualified for the playoffs in 11 out of 18 seasons. They also reached the finals six times. On that note, let’s elaborate on how MI have fared in the playoffs over the years.
1. IPL 2010- Runners-up
The playoffs format wasn’t introduced in the 2010 edition, and the top four teams used to qualify for the semi-finals. Under Sachin Tendulkar, MI topped the points table after the league stage in the 2010 season.
They also defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the 1st semi-final to book a berth in the final. However, they eventually lost the final against CSK by 22 runs and finished as runners-up.
2. IPL 2011- Lost Qualifier 2
Tendulkar-led MI once again qualified for the playoffs in IPL 2011 by finishing in the third spot in the points table during the league stage. They outplayed Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Eliminator match by four wickets. However, they lost the Qualifier 2 clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) by 43 runs and could not reach the final.
3. IPL 2012- Lost Eliminator
Harbhajan Singh-led MI reached the playoffs for the third time in a row in the 2012 edition. They captured the third spot in the points table in the league stage. However, they failed to outplay CSK in the Eliminator clash as the latter won the encounter by 38 runs.
4. IPL 2013- Champions
Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, MI finished in the second spot in the points table to qualify for the playoffs in IPL 2013. They lost the Qualifier 1 match against CSK by 48 runs.
However, they bounced back in Qualifier 2 and defeated the Rajasthan Royals (RR) by four wickets to qualify for the final. In the final, Rohit Sharma & co. outplayed CSK by 23 runs to win their first-ever IPL title.
5. IPL 2014- Lost Eliminator
In IPL 2014, defending champions Mumbai Indians qualified for the playoffs by finishing fourth in the points table. However, they failed to defeat CSK in the eliminator. Super Kings crushed Mumbai Indians by seven wickets to end their journey.
6. IPL 2015- Champions
In the 2015 edition, Mumbai made it to the playoffs by finishing second on the points table. The Rohit Sharma-led side defeated CSK by 25 runs in the Eliminator. Later, they defeated them once again by 41 runs in the final to grab their second IPL trophy.
7. IPL 2017- Champions
In the 2017 edition, MI topped the table. In the playoffs, they lost to the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants in Qualifier 1. They bounced back with a victory against KKR in Qualifier 2.
In the thrilling final, MI outplayed Supergiants by just one run in the low-scoring game to clinch the title.
8. IPL 2019- Champions
MI showed a fabulous form in the league stage of the 2019 season and finished at the top of the points table. They outplayed CSK by six wickets in the Qualifier 1 match to book a berth in the final.
Later, Rohit Sharma & co. outplayed the Super Kings once again in the final to grab the trophy. MI won the nail-biting clash by just one run.
9. IPL 2020- Champions
MI repeated their heroics in the 2020 season and won the title. Under Sharma’s leadership, Mumbai topped the points table and qualified for the playoffs. Later, they won their fifth IPL title by defeating the Delhi Capitals (DC) twice in Qualifier 1 and the final.
10. IPL 2023- Lost Qualifier 2
After two poor seasons, MI reached the playoffs in the 2023 season. During the league stage, they grabbed the fourth spot in the points table.
They captured a huge victory against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by 81 runs in the Eliminator clash. However, Gujarat Titans (GT) thrashed them by 62 runs in Qualifier 2 and ended their hopes of reaching the final.
