Shreyas Iyer scored 97*, his best IPL score, as he led PBKS to 243/5 against GT in IPL 2025.
Shreyas Iyer has advanced significantly, according to former national captain Sourav Ganguly, who called him the “most improved batter” in the past 12 months.
Iyer’s game-winning performance helped Punjab Kings (PBKS) defeat Gujarat Titans (GT) in their opening encounter of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 by 11 runs on Tuesday, March 25, at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. Iyer hit five fours and nine sixes in his unbeaten 97 off 42 balls. The Kings held their opponents to 232 for five after setting a difficult target of 244 for the Titans to chase.
Throughout his stellar display, Shreyas indicated that his prime nemesis, considered a short-length delivery, has now turned into a boon for him. Iyer, 30, has improved his game enough to play for India in all three formats, according to Sourav Ganguly.
Shreyas Iyer is the most improved batter, ready for all formats: Sourav Ganguly
After being removed from the BCCI’s central contract list for 2023–24, Shreyas has found himself again. With a new sense of confidence, he returned to the local setup for India, put in the work, and resumed playing international cricket.
Heading into IPL 2025, Shreyas had his purple patch of form after concluding India’s victorious Champions Trophy campaign as the country’s top run-scorer.
The former BCCI president expressed his delight after seeing a new version of the 30-year-old on social media.
He wrote on X, “Shreyas Iyer is the most improved batsman in the last 1 yr… ready for all formats. Great to see his improvement after a few issues on length.”
What the 30-year-old has been doing over the past year is reflected in his match-winning 97*. Shreyas scored 480 runs in five games for Mumbai during his most recent Ranji Trophy campaign, averaging 68.57 and hitting at a robust rate of 90.22.
Shreyas finished as the fourth-highest run scorer in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with 345 runs from nine games. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy, he showed off his prolific form by scoring 325 runs at an incredible average of 325.00 in five games.
He was in form in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as well for India, scoring 15, 56, 79, 45, and 48 in five matches.
When the Kings play Rishabh Pant’s Lucknow Super Giants on April 1 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, Shreyas will be hoping to maintain his strong play.
