IPL 2025: Suryakumar Yadav shatters all-time record of AB de Villiers, becomes highest run-getter as non-opener in a single season

Suryakumar Yadav is the leading run-scorer for MI in IPL 2025.
Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Mumbai Indians (MI) are locking horns in Qualifier 2 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Sunday, June 1. The encounter is taking place at the Narendra Modi International Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday (1st June)
PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer won the toss and opted to bowl first in the match. After rain delayed the start by two hours and 15 minutes, MI witnessed a marvellous start to the batting. After Rohit Sharma got out cheaply for eight runs, Jonny Bairstow and Tilak Varma powered the scoreboard to 65 runs in the powerplay.
While Bairstow got out for 38 runs, Varma added 44 runs. Suryakumar Yadav arrived with another brilliant knock in the season during the PBKS vs MI clash. The right-handed batsman slammed 44 runs off 26 balls.
Suryakumar Yadav breaks AB de Villiers’ record
With his knock, Suryakumar Yadav achieved a brilliant record in the IPL history. He became the highest run-getter as a non-opener in a single edition of the IPL. He overtook AB de Villiers and Rishabh Pant for the record.
De Villiers held the record earlier with 687 runs in IPL 2016, followed by Pant with 684 runs in the 2018 season. Yadav also became the first non-opener to touch the mark of 700 runs in a single edition of the tournament. He is also the first MI batter to smash more than 700 runs in a single edition.

The right-handed batsman has held a marvellous form in IPL 2025. He is the leading run-getter for the five-time champions in IPL 2025. He has mustered 717 runs in 16 games at an average of 65.18 and a strike rate of 167.91. He has also slammed five half-centuries with a top knock of an unbeaten 73 runs.
Meanwhile, the Qualifier 2 game witnessed a two-hour delay as the match was affected by rain at the start. However, no overs have been shortened from the encounter. The winner of the match will face Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in IPL 2025 final.
