Tilak Varma has slammed two half-centuries in IPL 2025.
Mumbai Indians (MI) batter Tilak Varma has finally reacted to the team management’s decision to retire him out during their encounter against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. During the encounter, Varma was retired out by the team to make way for Mitchell Santner in the 19th over, after he played a slow knock of 25 off 23 balls.
MI had to chase down a mammoth target of 204 runs in the match. When Varma left the field, MI needed 24 runs off seven balls. However, the move did not prove helpful as Hardik Pandya & Co. eventually lost the match by 12 runs.
Notably, Varma proved his batting might in MI’s last match against Delhi Capitals (DC). The left-handed batsman shattered quickfire half-century as MI crushed DC by 12 runs. With Varma’s top knock, MI posted a gigantic total of 205/5 in the first innings. Later, they bowled out DC for 193 runs.
I took it in a positive way: Tilak Varma on his retired out decision
After the MI vs DC encounter on Sunday, the MI youngster finally shared his reaction over his retired out decision. Varma said he took the decision in a positive way as it was for the team’s benefit. The decision had also invited criticism from some cricket experts. Varma also added that he is comfortable to bat at any position for the team.
“Nothing. I was just thinking that they made the decision for the team’s purpose. So, I took it in a positive way and didn’t take it in a negative way. But the main thing is how you take it. It’s more important. So I was thinking it that way. I just want to be comfortable wherever I bat. So I told the coach and staff, “Don’t worry wherever you play me, I’m comfortable, and I’ll give my best,” he was quoted as saying by Star Sports.
Interestingly, the 22-year-old batter scored consecutive half-centuries in the next two games after he was retired out in LSG game. Varma slammed 56 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and 59 against DC. After Suryakumar Yadav, he is the most successful batter for MI across six games. He has slammed 210 runs in five innings at an average of 42.0 and a strike rate of 143+, including two half-centuries.
Meanwhile, MI have won two games out of six in IPL 2025. They will next face Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 33rd match of the season. The encounter will be played on Thursday, April 17 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The Hardik Pandya-led side are currently placed seventh in the points table with four points.
