IPL is the richest and most followed T20 cricket league in the world.

Indian Premier League (IPL), the most prestigious and famous cricket T20 league in the world has crossed USD 16 billion (13,37,26,64,00,000 INR) in valuation as per U.S. investment bank Houlihan Lokey.

The T20 tournament competition, which began in 2008, features 10 franchisees based in major Indian cities, many of which are funded by Bollywood celebrities and wealthy businessmen.

It used the made-for-television, 20-overs per innings concept, which became extremely popular with spectators and sparked industry-shifting rivalry among media firms.

A T20 contest will often include 80 to 100 ad spots strategically arranged between overs, innings breaks, timeouts, and the fall of wickets. The bank compares the series to the NFL’s Super Bowl, which features new TV advertising each year.

Chennai Super Kings ranked No.1 brand ranking and business value ranking

This year, sponsors from fantasy apps, FMCG, FinTech, banks, and consumer electronics debuted new TV advertising during the games.

The stand-alone brand value of the IPL has increased by 6.3% to $3.4 billion (INR 28,000 crores), over the past year, Houlihan Lokey reckons. Title sponsorship, secured by the TATA Group for a further five-year period, from 2024 until 2028, has risen to approximately $300 million, a 50% increase over the previous per-season cost.

“The eight legacy teams that have been a part of the IPL for a long time are now able to reap substantial profits from both the central pool’s income distribution and their own franchisee revenues from sponsorships, gate receipts, and merchandise sales,” the bank said as per Variety website.

The Chennai Super Kings, placed first in both brand and business value rankings, are estimated to be worth $231 million. It is the league’s most consistent team, having advanced to the playoffs in 12 of its 15 seasons and winning five championships.

Shah Rukh Khan-owned Kolkata Knight Riders, who won the IPL 2024, are close following, with a 19% increase to $216 million.
