Irfan Pathan leaves out Sanju Samson as he names his India squad for T20 World Cup 2024
Irfan Pathan has included Virat Kohli in his predicted squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan released his pick of the India squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The tournament is set to be played in the month of June and will be jointly hosted by the West Indies and the USA.
India’s T20 World Cup squad will be selected in the latter week of April, before the deadline on May 1. Teams can, however, make alterations to their rosters before May 25. The first set of Indian cricketers whose teams do not qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs will leave for the United States on May 19. Meanwhile, India’s chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, is expected to attend the MI versus RR game on Monday in an attempt to identify talent.
With this in consideration, Irfan Pathan named his pick for the Team India squad in a conversation with ESPNCricinfo.
One surprising exclusion from Pathan’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 was Kerala keeper-batter Sanju Samson. Pathan opined that Rishabh Pant is just coming back from injury, but should be included in the Indian squad. The other two options he named were Jitesh Sharma and KL Rahul.
“Rishabh Pant is only just coming back from a life-threatening accident and multiple surgeries. Jitesh Sharma has shown lots of potential but doesn’t have the body of work yet in international cricket. Then there’s also KL Rahul who has the versatility to bat wherever he needs to,” Pathan stated.
Irfan Pathan backs Mohsin Khan to be included in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad
India’s batting will continue to revolve around Rohit Sharma, who will captain, and Virat Kohli, who has demonstrated in this IPL that he has expanded his game and is eager to hit boundaries immediately. Pathan insists that Kohli is critical in a major event and dispels certain myths regarding his strike rate.
Pathan’s chosen batting unit comprises all the usual names like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Suryakumar Yadav, and Rinku Singh. Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja are the two all-rounders picked by Pathan.
Irfan also believes that any side that wants to win a World Cup must have “a gun left-arm fast bowler” and supports Uttar Pradesh and Lucknow Super Giants’ Mohsin Khan, even though he has yet to be capped internationally.
Irfan Pathan’s India T20 World Cup squad:
Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rinku Singh, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant/Jitesh Sharma, KL Rahul, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravi Bishnoi, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh/Mohsin Khan, Mohammed Siraj
