Akash Deep had replaced Jasprit Bumrah in India XI for the Edgbaston test.
Irfan Pathan reacted to India pacer Akash Deep’s performance on day two of the ongoing second test against England with the ball for his team. India’s innings folded on day 2 after tea for 587 runs, and soon after, Akash rattled the opposition’s top order in quick succession.
At the Edgbaston test, Shubman Gill, the captain of Team India, exceeded the expectations of the supporters with an outstanding performance. After scoring 269 runs on the second day of play, the new number four batsman turned into a major problem for England.
In his third innings as the Indian test captain, Gill made an impression by surpassing Virat Kohli’s legendary test record in the Edgbaston test, becoming the Indian captain with the highest test score.
On the second day of the Edgbaston test between India and England, Shubman Gill was a key batsman. The Indian captain placed pressure on the English bowling attack by scoring his first double century, thanks to his incredible tenacity and good shot choice.
He made 269 runs with 30 fours and three sixes, adding 203 runs with Ravindra Jadeja (89) and 144 runs with Washington Sundar (42). He looked set for a triple hundred before getting out for 269 runs as India’s innings folded for 587 runs.
Akash Deep rocks England with wickets of Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope; Irfan Pathan reacts
When it came to India’s bowling, Akash Deep took the new ball and gave 11 runs in the first over. However, he made a huge comeback in his second over. He picked up two wickets in two balls in the third over of the England innings.
First, he had Ben Duckett caught in slips by Shubman Gill for a five-ball duck. Duckett tried to show his aggressive streak as Akash Deep bowled a delivery outside off-stump. Duckett tried to cut it, and Captain Gill took an excellent catch at third slip.
The next ball, he had England vice-captain Ollie Pope squared up on the first ball he faced, and Karun Nair took an easy catch in the slips.
Seeing this bowling, former India seamer Irfan Pathan gloated on social media. Pathan had backed Akash Deep’s inclusion in the India XI in case Jasprit Bumrah was rested. He had called Akash a rhythm bowler and compared his bowling style with veteran Mohammed Shami.
And now, when he rattled the England top order, Pathan posted on X: “Why i was backing Akashdeep in absence of Bumrah? Brilliant bowling.”
