Rohit Sharma failed to make a mark with bat in first IND vs ODI game.

Senior Indian batter Rohit Sharma featured in the first ODI against Afghanistan in Dharamsala on Saturday. The opener didn’t have a great outing as he scored 16 runs before getting out during India’s chase in the rain-curtailed contest, which the hosts eventually won by seven wickets.

Rohit Sharma‘s fitness was a major talking point heading into the three-match ODI series, especially after the hamstring injury he suffered during IPL 2026. India’s team management closely monitored his fitness, but he received a green signal from BCCI’s CoE, and was deemed fit for IND vs AFG series.

The 39-year-old also took a blow on his wrist during first game, and received treatment after experiencing discomfort. However, he continued his innings before eventually getting dismissed during India’s chase of 195 in the reduced 25-over match. His injury scare took the social media by storm with many claiming that he has been ruled out of the series.

Despite several claims circulating on X and other social media platforms suggesting Rohit could miss the remainder of the Afghanistan ODI series due to injury, there has been no official confirmation from the BCCI or the Indian team management regarding his withdrawal.

The senior opener looked fine while batting after the injury. He also achieved a major milestone during the match, becoming only the second Indian opener after Virender Sehwag to complete 16,000 international runs. The number is expected to increase as he is expected to play for a year or so.

Afghanistan were bowled out for 194 in the rain-affected first ODI, with the debutant Gurnoor Brar finishing as India’s standout bowler. The right-arm pacer picked up 3/27, while Harsh Dubey also took three wickets and Arshdeep Singh and Nitish Kumar Reddy chipped in with two wickets each to restrict the visitors to total under 200.

During India’s chase, Shubman Gill anchored the innings with 84 runs after Rohit Sharma’s dismissal in the powerplay. India completed the chase comfortably with seven wickets in hand to take an early lead in the series, continuing their dominant ODI record against Afghanistan.

India currently lead the three-match ODI series 1-0 after their victory in Dharamsala, with the second ODI scheduled to be played in Lucknow on June 17.
